Food Artisans of Japan: Recipes and stories

A great book for japanophiles
Love this book. I own several Japanese cookbooks and this one is not like the others. There are many stories about foods and artisans in various regions of Japan. Be warned, the recipes don't appear very easy or what you'd usually think of a traditional Japanese food, so I bought this book more so for the stories and further insight into Japanese cooking and culture.

Beautiful Book for Price of Frappuccino
What a crazy sale! A gorgeous hardcover inside and out. Not a strict COOKBOOK, as it's main priority is not exactly to offer recipes (although it does give many, with photos). It's more about the culture and agriculture of food, featuring beautiful exposes on chef artisans around Japan. Can't wait to read it all!

A great gift for someone you love!
Great book, beautiful pictures, this book is written by an American lady who choose to live her life in Japan with a Japanese farmer. I bought 3 of them already...

Although the books are always beautifully presented, the quality of the recipes can vary
Rarely do I write reviews, but this book deserves all the stars I can give it. I collect cookbooks, and whenever Phaidon releases a new one, I automatically purchase it. Although the books are always beautifully presented, the quality of the recipes can vary, and some of the books have practically no recipe notes at all (squinting at you, VEGAN).Fortunately for me, this cookbook checks all of my boxes. The presentation is gorgeous, with full-color photographs accompany every two or three recipes. Furthermore, there is a LOT of information about ingredients, preparation methods, meal presentation and cooking/serving equipment. You can really learn a lot just by paging through this volume, which is one of the most important qualities I look for in a cookbook.I would also note that this book is bound in such a way that it stays open on a cookbook stand, which is a huge help. It's a sizable tome, but not so thick that it won't fit in my stand. That may not be important to some, but it's nice to be able to use a cookbook without scraping up the bottoms of the pages as you wrestle the thing into your cookbook holder. So, final verdict: BUY IT. ::)

A Beautiful Book
Like all of Nancy’s books, this is a book that you will want to read cover to cover. I loved the stories on the food artisans and found them touching and descriptive. The recipes are were where I felt a bit of a disconnect. I loved the recipes in Nancy’s Japanese Farm Food book. However, the recipes in this book seem more “special occasion” to me. Though beautiful presented, they come off as more of the finer cuisine of Japan - something that I would expect to be served in a nicer restaurant. Not that there is anything wrong with this, but I am doubtful I will make any of them as they seem fussy (keep in mind I do cook Japanese food almost, if not daily). It just would’ve been nice to see a bit of balance with some recipes.Overall the recipes seem like a collection of recipes either by or inspired by very incredible chefs. Again, there’s nothing wrong with this but I would’ve like something I was a little more... accessible and realistic. All that said, for the stories, this book is a must have for anyone interested in Japanese food culture.
