More misinformation than information.
Too many outright errors, some of them outrageously careless. When it comes to being grilled on the facts, I believe this book will do a reader more harm than good. Fortunately for me I had enough Java background and familiarly with the smell of Weasel, to quickly jettison the book out of my kindle app.

more questions ?
Wanting to brush up on the latest java, especially if you are a professional java programmer? Oracle, which of course now owns java, offers an exam to become a somewhat grandly titled Oracle Certified Associate in Java SE 7. Reese offers this book to study for that exam.Ideally, an experienced java programmer can breeze through the book. It is really meant for a somewhat new programmer, for the contents are largely low level and could have been treated in a similar book for java of say 10 years ago. What do I mean? An example is the explanation of not confusing the bitwise operators (&, ^, |) with the logical operators (&&, ||). Or that 'true' and 'false' are restricted since they are keywords in java. In other words, you cannot name a variable 'true'. You did know this already, right? Another example is how when you have embedded if-else constructs to explicitly use curly brackets to delimit each branch, instead of relying on your memory and the compiler to correctly do what you intended. Each chapter has a short problem set at its end. Too short. Maybe the book would be more useful to a reader who needs exam preparation if there were more problems. Learn by doing, or at least by more testing of a chapter's contents. On the level of difficulty, I found the problems to be rather simple. But this could be correct, in accurately resembling the actual problems in a real exam. So how about just having more problems of this level?

A good introduction to Java for newcomers, test prep for others
The book contains 9 chapters of matter-of-fact text written in a clean and readable style. Illustrations are provided for most topics that would benefit from them. Illustrations are clean and minimal. The book is over 330 pages, so a pretty big book. The style is consistent. Each chapter starts with an overview of what will be covered, followed by explanatory text and followed by an explanation of which exam topics were explained. Every chapter is ended with a quick quiz to let the reader test their understanding.Long-time Java users shouldn't find much new material here except the test preparation parts. Folks new to Java should find this a decent introduction to Java SE and may find it a good reference as they go about gathering experience. I would not recommend this as a sole resource for starting to develop Java, as there aren't many hand-holding whole-program examples suitable for ground-up learning. There are lots of clean examples that can be extracted and run in an existing project that would benefit from them. All told, this book is a fair contribution to the workspace. If you seek the Java 7 SE certification, it's probably worth your time to check this one out.

Poor for preparing for test.
I bought the kindle version of this book. The book is Not, in my opinion, a study guide and is not enough information to get you a passing grade on the test. This book is at best a quick read to introduce you to the topics covered. It is not a bad book, its written well and is easy to read. But it will only introduce the topics to you. A study guide is something that prepares you for a test, this is not that.

Excellent introduction to the topics....
but comes short with few examples and even fewer questions for self review. You will probably not pass the test if you only read and work with this book. I personally bought this as well as Deitel's Java How to Program 9th edition, + 3 ePractice exams from Oracle's ilearning, and passed with a good margin.

Great book
The book is great, informative with a great structure. Though I have discovered some little mistakes within text, but that is forgivable.

Schade ...
Alles in allem keine Kaufempfehlung.
