LAUGHED TILL I CRIED
I just finished reading this book and I have to say it's a good job I was never reading it on public transport as tears of laughter were pouring down my face at times. I was born at the start of the 50s in Scotland but I could relate to a lot of what Alex Cotton experienced in her childhood, especially about the hair! My grandma was very fond of telling us that we were as God made us, if we dared say there was something about ourselves that we were less than fond of. However, when it came to my hair she changed her tune. She seemed to hate my thick, strong, poker-straight hair and was always on at me and my Mum about some "other little girls" of her acquaintance who had lovely curls that "bounced when they walked". On several occasions the result of this grandmotherly interference was that I had a perm inflicted upon me. Always a disaster! However mild the perm was supposed to be my hair always ended up a mass of tight frizz that stood out all over my head. Oh she shame of it. Unfortunately, I wasn't nearly as good at shrugging off such horrors as Alex.I am now off to order Alex's second book. I'm sure it'll be as hilarious as this one.

A really good book
This is a fun book of how we lived before the cell phones and computers. Where here in Sweden there where only two channels on the TV and all kids was spent the tines outside playing. Even if the Author is a few years older then me and lived in another country it brings back a lot of memories from my own childhood. The writing is fun and made m laugh out loud a couple of times. To all of you that wasn't even born in the late 60's and 70's reas it and found out how we survived and even had a lot of fun playing with each other instead of just talking online and live on social media.

Laughing through childhood with a crazy mother
Cotton's flair for storytelling and gift for words make this childhood memoir tremendously funny, although you can imagine another author making the same stories quite sad.Her mother is erratic, to put it kindly. She's self-centered, has a nasty temper, even violent, and whether on purpose or no, picks the kind of clothing and glasses that her schoolmates find a gift from the gods of childhood teasing. Her father is loving but ineffectual. But Cotton looks back on these times and finds the funny side, telling stories of her mother's tempers and bizarre habits, as well as more typical childhood anecdotes with verve and an eye for the absurd.

Look at me, I am strong
Hmmmm, this book was quite something else. Brought back a lot of memories of dysfunctional families. Alex seemed to be the daughter her mom wished she never had. She did learn how to mitigate some of the problems but there were many secrets to be kept--from her father and later when her father had her keep secrets from the mother. Alex hoped school would give her some relief but just when she thought part of her life would be happy her mother either dresses her totally stupid, buys hideous glasses she has to wear (I can relate to that one), gives her a haircut that really makes her the laughing stock of the school--and these were not all in one year!! Anyway, this book is well written and not written in a way as to be looking for sympathy--just relating a crazy story of growing up.

Fun to read!
So glad I read this book. It was so fun to read and nice to know that we all went thru the same strange things back then; along with dealing with off-the-wall personalities who freely reigned back then, lol. I read the whole series this week. I was willing to overlook the random grammar issues (which I never do) because I was anxious to see who did what next. I hope we get to see another one soon.

FUNNY !!!
What a cute book this is ! I think the author is a bit younger than me, and from England, but a lot of her growing up years sounded like mine, especially the really bad hairdos (thanks to Dear Old Mom ) and the stupid looking clothes that she picked for me .Only thing missing were the "Dame Edna" glasses. :)This book was so hilarious. I'm going to purchase the others in the set now , This author should be a stand-up comedian if she's not already !Hilarious stories about her whacky mom, her dad's desire to "decorate" the house in as many colors as possible , and her funny little baby brother.Thank you for the laughs !

Weird but amusing
As I read this memoir I couldn’t decide how much was true and how much was for effect. In the end it doesn’t matter, as it reminded me of similar things in my own life while it offered insights into growing up in small town northern England. Worth a look - even if it is sometimes cringeworthy (especially when describing her mother).

A glorious laugh
What a gem!!I read the reviews and the overall consensus is that this is a really funny book. They aren't wrong. I laughed so hard in some places and it made me think of my grandmother who was a tiny little Welsh firecracker. There are some formatting errors but I don't think this has anything to do with the author and really didn't detract from the story in any way.I will most certainly be downloading the next book.Keep writing please
