Schaum's Outline of Beginning Linear Algebra

I gave it a 5 star even though the practical rating might be more like 4 to 5 some where. This book is a great prep for those going into their beginning linear algebra. I read PART (think if I would have read it all!) of it before going into the class and thus was well prepared for the "Star Trek braking from warp factor 10 effect in which Mr. Scott claims the ship cant take much more of this" effect, which occurs in any math (science for that matter) class as initial "oh know I dont understand this" effect occurs as things are thrust upon one at ten miles a second. I promise you that if you stick with this book by pre-prepping yourself, by reading say at least half or more of this book, then you will be well prepared to take on a beginning linear algebra class & also well prepared to GET AN A which is, lets face it, what we are all in school for. The book is very good, but there are a few caveats. The book does have quite a few typos which, for me, were easy to spot. Although this is usually an exteme no-no for a scientific book, by the time you get to linear algebra you should have enough "math maturity" to figure it out, although I hate to say this as for some it might not. Another caveat about Scham's series, although very good, is that many times what the standard college terminology uses & Schaum's uses are "a little different" (eg. how he terms parametric equations), so one must not get too devoted to the Schaum's way versus the Professor's way as the Professor's way is going to win out! This can be especially troublesome if trying to use a Schaum's book WHILE TAKING THE CLASS & NOT PRE-PREPPING BEFORE CLASS STARTS AS IT CAN LEAD TO CONFUSION & ULTIMATELY UNLEARNING THINGS YOU HAD DOWN, simply because the time pressures of a college class are immense. Thus, my recommendation is if Schaum's starts confusing you up due to different variable symbols, etc. being used then stop & concentrate on your class material until the Scaum's comes back into perspective. FROM MY PERSPECTIVE THIS IS A MUST BUY BOOK THAT IF USED A FEW WEEKS OR MORE BEFORE THE CLASS WILL MAKE THIS CLASS MUCH MORE FUN, GIVE ONE AN INSIDE TRACK ON GETTING AN A, AND IN GENERAL WILL PREVENT HAIR LOSS BY PULLING/STRESS. IT WAS A GREAT BUY AT A REASONABLE PRICE. The book arrived on time & in good shape.

The most comprehensive linear algebra book I have.By following up the instruction to concept and solved problem, it is indeed easy to understand those abstract concepts!

This book has been delivered fast and really good book for introductory linear algebra. Lots of problems have been solved and this book is good for quick review of linear algebra also.

The book however is very terse, the advantages are the huge amount of material and exercises however. I'd recommend as a refresher course after you study a foundation Linear Algebra course. As a first course I would look elsewhere.It could be used as a self-study text but you'd need to supplement it with web resources, if that is OK then I would recommend it but it would be tough going (although you would admittedly learn quite a bit).
