Only the Lover Sings: Art and Contemplation

Creativity vs. noise
The book's argumentations are not as thoroughly developed as "Abuse of Language Abuse of Power", "The Virtues of the Human Heart", or "Leisure the Basis of Culture" but all three of these books' ideas are touched on. I don't even recommend it as a Pieper introduction, "In Defense of Philosophy" is better for that; the narrow confines of his point making here may discourage a reader from pursuing Pieper's ideas further. Pieper was making the argument that we lack a true appreciation of the roots of ideas coming from the Western/Christian tradition and Pieper wishes to set people right and further correct the wrongs in the direction society has often taken. He points at the destructive noise of society of commercialism, sloganism, society not understanding the contemplative spirit of our tradition. Being creative is a good possible cure Pieper notes, seeing beyond what the eyes see and into the soul or spirit, although he places a caveat on this and defines a correct approach.

I loved this book, if you love to think about music and the arts, this will change how you listen to music forever, Pieper is one of my all time favorite authors. His ability to take theology and apply it to areas of our lives that often don't get enough thought, is truly brilliant.

A Sampler in Christian Aesthetics
This is a collection of brief speeches given the late Josef Pieper, one of the most popular Thomist philosophers of the last century. The topics addressed include work and leisure, music, seeing, sculpture, celebration, and contemplation. The book's title is taken from St. Augustine's remark that "only he who loves can sing," and if there is an underlying theme to these occasional pieces it is that art and love, aesthetics and spirituality, cannot be divorced. A sample quote: "Contemplation is visual perception prompted by loving acceptance."Due to their brevity, these essays can only be suggestive. But perhaps they may whet the reader's appetite for more substantial portions of Pieper's thoughtful yet accessible philosophizing.

A wonderful, refreshing book
This book, written by Joseph Pieper, is a beautiful little exposition and collection of his thoughts on topics such as work, music, art, and sculpture. I really enjoyed reading it because Pieper has a piercing insight and presents his case without much of the philosophical jargon that can be common in such works of philosophy. He is clear and straightforward and provides a refreshing look at the possibility of a life lived in contemplation. It is an excellent read and I highly recommend it.

A book for all time
A book that can be read over and over. The inspiration is never exhausted. The author opens the door of the heart where spirituality flows unbounded by preconceived ideas. This is what art has been doing forever.

A new notion
Not an easy read, but well worth the endeavor. Take your time and plan to think... deeply.
