Winco Scale Peeler, 9.5-Inch

Really simple to use. Can get all areas of the fish. The design is such that it keeps the scales from flipping all over the place to a minimum. Great tool!

I usually use a knife blade (held vertical) to scrape off fish scales, but the scales fly everywhere. There must be something better, but what? I compared 3 scalers side by side on removing salmon scales - both small and medium scales with the sharp edge of a knife.1. The first was Fish Scaler Scale Remover #2262  Fish Scaler Scale Remover #2262 . I had high hopes for this inexpensive device, but it barely works against average to small size scales. As another reviewer noted, its teeth are not even slightly sharp. Not only are the scales barely removed, but the scales still fly everywhere. I finally gave up! Inexpensive, but USELESS! Perhaps it would work better for large scales? Sorry, but definitely 1-star.2. Fish Scaler by Douglas Net Company  Fish Scaler  did not make a good first impression since it looks like it was stamped out of an old galvanized garbage can and it was coated with some greasy substance. Additionally, its hard edges and sharp teeth make it a bit hard to hold. However, it was the least expensive and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. It removes scales much quicker and effectively than a knife and captures a fair amount of scales. It can be used by pulling or by moving sideways over the fish skin. It is easy to clean, although I am not sure how long the galvanized metal will last. Never-the-less it is a worthwhile purchase and 4-stars.3. Stainless Steel Fish Scaler - 9-1/2" (this one) does NOT look exactly like the picture. The one in the picture appears to have been bent and damaged in shipping. The one I received has more uniform sides, although the metal is somewhat flimsy. Since it is flimsy, it may have trouble against fish with very, very large scales (I don't know). Unlike the picture, it also has actual teeth which quickly and efficiently removed the fish scales. It is slightly more expensive than the other two. A side to side motion seems to work best and it cleans easily. It captures just a bit more scales than number 2 and it is easy to hold. It is just a bit better than number 2 overall and so it is my favorite scaler of these three. Although it is not perfect, I give it 5-stars since it is the best manual scaler I have found so far.

Made scaling fish twice as fast. Of course some of the scales on going to jump and go everywhere. That is a part of scaling and cleaning fish. We love the skin on fish just as much as the meat itself. It makes the fish crunchy and taste better of the sweetness of the skin. The skin has NO fishy taste if you scale all the scales off. Just like the fish with the skin on and try it. You will find it makes the fish so much better.

better than using a knife, simple and works as expected, just make sure not to spray scale around. Using a deep sink and slow flowing water helps to contain scales.

I purchased this for my husband. He cooks a lot of fish, mostly salmon, as we are pescatarian. It has made scaling fish so much easier than using a knife. It also make clean up easier. Scales still get around, but not as much when compared to scaling with a knife. Overall, I would purchase this again, if needed. But I don't anticipate to since the quality of this item is excellent. It has a good sized handle for grip and you can easily control how to scale the fish since the ridges on the blades are sharp. The peeler is not too long or too short, allowing the scales to be removed efficiently and without any difficulty.

Have been using for a year or two now and buying one for my brother. Works perfectly and good stainless quality. great product and value

When I showed this to my husband he said, "I have this before and this really works but got lost and I couldn't remember where I bought it". I bought him before a more fancy and expensive fish scaler made in Germany but he rarely use it. We found out later while shopping, that we bought it before from an oriental store and bought another one to give to his fishing buddy. He uses this scaler all the time.

Amazingly awesome.works great, so far used it on Pike, an 8 lb pickerel, lake trout.

Bought more than 10 and share with all my friends. Cheap and worth it.
