The Book brought me a Raise
Firstly this whole series of books is just so good especially if you want to learn how to play some exotic music on your good old six string.I have an Indian student and she took a liking to classical guitar. I had bought this book and started learning all the songs and loving them and then one day I start teaching the girl Mahatma Ghandi's Theme song called Ragu Pati Ragu. She gets the song down and just before the end of the lesson her parents tell me they wish to speak with me upon the conclusion of the lesson and I think--oh no, I did something wrong. They were so taken by my sensitivity to their culture and the results of their daughters lessons that they gave me a raise. Thanks Sanjay: 1. for introducing me to a wonderful style and 2. for your part on getting me a raise. The book itself is a gem with some real gorgeous music. What is really awesome is how Sanjay dissects Raga into a very accessable form.namaste

Not a bad start
This book has more information than I have gotten anywhere else. I would like to see a few more transcriptions of actual raga improvisations rather than just the broad outlines of the concepts involved. There are a variety of interesting scales and information on creating a raga improvisation written in TAB and Standard notation . The best I`ve found so far. Please let me know about any other sources for studying the playing of Indian music that are in book form.

Very Satisfied with this Book and Series
I found this book very helpful in explaining the different types of India music or genres such as devotional music, folk music, and classical music. I really enjoyed learning the ragas in the classical music section and hope to use some of this information for a live setting to play with others some day. These books are easy to understand, discuss a lot of important history behind the country, India, as well as the history of the music. I feel these books are an easy way to get involved inn Ethnomusicology in a very inexpensive way that really allows you to see how closely related most music of the world is.

Finger weg!
