Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean [Blu-ray]

A hidden Gem
Ok, it’s slow in the beginning. And it is a bit rocky and drags at times. And the look of the film was a little rough because due to it being a low budget film it was shot and what was called super 16 mm. You have to have some patience with this film. But it gets interesting and moving emotionally as it goes along. This is a rare film and you have to be in a rare mood to watch it. You have to understand it was a play. It’s about these women coming together. It’s not really about their James Dean club it’s about them the people they are the problems they’ve had in life the people they’ve become. The RP would really appreciate seeing a film like this. They don’t make films with this depth anymore or let’s say they hardly ever do. You’re right something like this you can’t get a budget to put it together to make a film deal nowadays. No you can see a superhero film you can see an animation film you can see your horror film but you can’t see something like this. It’s just not done. Plus most writers can’t read write something like this.90 people will say that they acting is over the top but it isn’t really. They each do a good job. Nobody here really hits it out of the park. They all do a good job. Beyond satisfactory. And the material does give them some limits. Hey, if somebody had put some serious money into this and a few more talented writers had a crack at it and the production budget was more and Altman had maybe some serious time to make the film, yes it would’ve been stupendous but for what it is it is a great little film. It really truly is. In fact it is a classic it’s beyond a cult film.It would be nice of film students watch this and learn some things from it. However, the studios are gonna let them make something like this. This film just isn’t gonna make money. Sadly these types of films are shown at art houses. And that’s sad because back in the 1940s Warner Brothers could’ve made a film like this and something along these lines, with sort of a film war look and it would’ve done quite well. I can pick up a number of actresses that could’ve started in it. They didn’t think similar to this were women sort of beard their souls to want another. But it don’t make films like that anymore. It’s too bad. This might be a film for a group of women to watch on an evening that they have together when they really want to spend some time watching a serious interesting film about women.

it's got everything....
...you could possibly want in a film: suspense, mystery, cringe, laughter, sadness & those scenes that make you think. i can see why Cher is so proud of this; she did a wonderful job. And to top it all off, Cher would make 3 more back to back films, jump-start her singing career and win an Oscar in the 5 years that followed "...Jimmy Dean". Her co-stars were fantastic!! I could see why she's always spoken so highly of this movie & the 5 STAR performances given by Bates, Black, Dennis, Bond & Patton!! I could easily see this becoming a go-to movie for me.

Great Performances
The construction of the play is flawed and the writing is often melodramatic. The film succeeds, however, due to the rich performances of the actors - particularly the three leads.

Wondrous - Powerful - Important
I just watched this movie again the other night for what MUST have been about the 25th time. No matter the number of viewings, this is one of those productions that doesn't lose its edge over the years - still quite a mesmerizing project. It is indeed just as timely today as Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On?"The simple plot revolves around a 25-year reunion of a high school James Dean fan club. An unusually clever way to navigate between their high school years and the actual reunion is that the "flashbacks" utizlized the actual actors as opposed to looking for younger versions. To see certain emotional growths (as well as missteps) within the same character is nothing short of devastating. In terms of gay cinema, I suggest this ranks right up there with "The Childrens' Hour" by Lillian Hellman. This film is just as powerful, thought-provoking, startling, uncomfortable, DEFINITELY liberating, and ultimately is a classic example of theatrical orgasm of the highest order. The ensemble is quite simply impeccable. This was the first dramatic role I had EVER seen Cher in and to say I was blown away is a masterpiece of understatement. After this performance, it is most obivous that Cher is a consummate actress. Accompanied by the likes of Sandy Dennis, Kathy Bates, and the positively breath-taking performance of Karen Black, this gives you a very good idea of the caliber of the ensemble, all of whom were positively wooooooooonderful in bringing such a powerful play to the screen. Credit/kudos certainly goes to director Robert Altman for having the foresight to assemble such a powerful cast to create an unforgettable viewing experience.I HIGHLY recommend as one of Altman's best projects as well as a profoundly important film. This most certainly should be on DVD by now!!!!February 6, 2014! Just watched it again last night!!....(sigh)....Jo triumphantly returns as whatever the hell he wants to!!!! ...ahhhhhh, just what the doctor ordered!!! :0).....sniff, sniff.....:0)
