A great read
Even if one is from Seattle, or unfamiliar with competitive intercollegiate rowing, one may well have never heard the name George Yeoman Pocock. This is a history of a family-owned, multi-century business which generated collegiate athletes the world over an instrument of such perfection, winning national championships, Olympic gold medals, and creating a dynasty here in Seattle. Forget the Sonics, Seahawks,Sounders, Storm. For a real dynasty, look no further than Pocock Rowing Shells, because without Mr. Pocock’s shells, there would not be one.

The Man Who Changed Rowing Forever
Anyone who rows or watches rowing will find this book edifying. The story of George Pocock is an amazing one. The man changed the sport by building the most technologically advanced shells of his time. His shells virtually dominated rowing from coast to coast and were used by several Olympic champion crews. Yet he always said there are no fast boats, just fast crews. Pocock's son followed in his footsteps, continuing to build the world's finest shells on the shores of Lake Union in Seattle. It is not by accident that the University of Washington has been dominant in collegiate rowing for many years. Go Dawgs!

A good read
The book has met all of my expectations and perhaps a little more. The use of selected passages attributed to George Pocock himself is a personal touch and you almost get the impression that he is speaking to you in person. I had been looking for a reasonably priced copy for some time so it was a pleasant surprise when I found it. A delayed Christmas present but very grateful all the same.

Interesting companion to Boys in the Boat.
Good followup/companion to "Boys in the Boat". George Yeoman was the English shell builder, importer of the Thames stroke adapted by UW, and essentially the team sports psychologist, even though that term hadn't been invented yet.

Simply one of the best Philanthropic books about a down to earth man.
The creator of modern rowing the man was a very modest and kindly gentleman who could have become exceedingly rich, instead he supported his love of the sport he learned from. This book is outstanding in the way it is written with a history of the man and his interaction as a Coach but above all it tells of how he developed the modern racing shell. If you can get a copy in hard back you will not be disappointed, I'm a kayak Coach and the inspiration this book gives me is just so satisfying. No guff just pure fact and guidance.A book I can read again and again, if you read Boys in the Boat then this fills in Yeomans part in superb detail.
