GOOD SOIL AMENDMENT FOR INCREASING DRAINAGE
I make up my own potting medium for outside pots. It consists of peat moss, sand (regular builders sand that you buy at Home Depot in the concrete section) perlite, pine bark mulch and some compost. The problem with container planting for plants that you want to keep in the containers for years is that the commercial peat-lite mixtures break down and become heavy, encouraging root rot.I purchased this perlite to lighten regular garden soil in the area where I intend to plant creeping phlox (like sun, and great drainage). I also plan to use it when I'm ready to begin making the mixture for some new pots. You will likely find small bags of perlite at garden centers that, if you buy enough of them, are not cost effective. This size is great - the perlite never spoils, and so it is a bargain.

Making The Soil Outstanding!
It seems to last "forever". The bag I used two years ago is still going strong and not turning to dust! Works well keeping the soil moist even on hot days!

Just what I needed
Bought this because our venus flytraps require very loose soil. The perlite at the local stores all have fertilizer or plant food added and that will kill our little flytraps. This was just what we needed and is a nice big bag that will last for years for this purpose.
