AVOID THE PAPERBACK from Shepperd Publications!
This paperback is listed next to hardcover and Kindle versions. The latter choices have 672 and 486 pages. The paperback is 126 pages. Others have noted the lack of an index or table of contents or illustrations. The back cover has a random paste of text from a story. The book looks like a stack of stories printed and bound at Kinkos (or whatever your local copy house is). I regret not reading all the details before I made the purchase. To repeat: This paperback is not comparable to the other choices on Amazon's page. It's not worth any price. I wish I could leave negative stars for this review.

the best version out there with wonderful illustrations throughout
I bought this for our local library...the best version out there with wonderful illustrations throughout. For anyone interested in the Grimm's scholarship, the women who kept the tales alive and how the brothers collected the stories. With an afterword by Joseph Campbell. With this book and Bruno Bettelhiem's book on faiyrtales and their inner meaning, you're all set!

Great Book!
Wow, awesome collection! Warning: These are the real Grimm Fairy Tales, so don't expect the happy-go-lucky stories of your youth, which is why I wanted to order it. I really wanted to see how time and word of mouth has softened these, originally gruesome, stories. Excellent book, would recommend!

DON'T BUY THE BLACK PAPERBACK VERSION
(1) Lo-res images. Terribly ugly. The "look inside" feature above suggests that the images will be color; however, they are black and white. Despite the book being 200 pages long, the pictures disappear after page 44. One image appears twice on neighboring pages.(2) The formatting was obviously not done carefully. There is no table of contents or index. Some titles appear as the last line of a page with the story starting on the back side. The text on the back was copied verbatim from Wikipedia.(3) The dull, matte, black cover material is a magnet for oil. It picked up several blemishes just being removed from the packaging.I would only recommend this version to someone who wants the cheapest choice, period, regardless of physical quality.

I was delighted! I love this book!
Wonderful! Excellent Seller. Perfect Shipping. Attractive dust-jacket. I think this book would be a superb addition to any library! It certainly is for mine!! I was extremely impressed by how well it was wrapped for shipping. The stories themselves are my main reason for buying this. My Sincere Thanks To This Seller!! I will buy from you again! I’m SO very pleased with this book and our transaction! Money Well-Spent!!

A definite bargain
This Kindle edition is split into two parts: Part I contains all 210 of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm's fairy tales; Part II has their ten children's legends, which involve religious figures. I could have gotten a free copy of Grimm's fairy tales, but it only had 25 entries. It was definitely worth it to upgrade to this version, especially since this e-book has an active table of contents. There are also some illustrations, but they are small and it is hard to make out any detail.I still have my old childhood book of Grimm's Fairy Tales, and one of the surprises in this e-book collection was the number of tales that involved religious figures, e.g. God, Jesus, the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, and the Twelve Apostles. These stories were left out of my original book, and it's easy to figure out why because Mary and Joseph really come down hard on disobedient little girls: "at last [the lizards and snakes] stung the wicked child to death, and they stung the mother in the foot, because she had not brought her up better."There are very few mistakes in the text barring an occasional free-floating mystery sentence and some doubling up of the first letter in a story. This book is a definite bargain.

Quality of illustrations are very poor. Not worth the money.
I ordered this book primarily because I wanted all of Rackham's illustrations. What a disappointment they are. The pictures are blurry and the colors are all wrong. I've seen many of the originals and they are not at all as pictured in this expensive and disappointing book. Additionally, it took weeks and weeks to arrive, even though it said that it was being sent by Amazon.

pretty cover, but...
Pretty cover, but...too bad they skimped on the paper quality. The paper is so thin that it is somewhat translucent and the text from the other side shows thru, a bit. A larger, better spaced font would have been nice too. Translation of 1897, so thee & thou type language.

Chartwell Edition - no fancy gilt work
The Chartwell edition text is Margaret Hunt's translation of 1897. Probably the same translation used by many as it will be out of copyright. So the language is from 1897 - thee thou thine, and feels a little archaic today, but not difficult to read. The paper is smooth white matt, and fine (just as well for 600 pages of it). It is printed in a nice clear font, and easy to read. The illustrations are printed on the same paper in black and white. Some work better than others. Some seem a little blocked up, where others are quite light, and some are like paper cut silhouettes. i would have thought them by different artists but the only attribution is to Arthur Rackham. The dust jacket is matt green paper. The binding underneath is plain green cloth - don't expect any fancy covering or gilt work that might be described in some of the other reviews - they do not belong to the Chartwell edition. When I bought this it was about £8, remarkably cheap for a 600 page book of this quality. A good book, but I am looking for updated English, better illustration and better binding. (cant expect that for £8). If you just want to read the stories then I cannot fault this edition.

A must for any collector
The day it arrived I was so excited , I could not wait to get it out of the packaging. What I saw before me was pure beauty. The cover is a vivid red with gold writing giving it a somewhat old feeling to it and the illustration is amazing.I was already content. The only thing that surprised me was the thickness of the pages. They are quite thin , but that's not stopping me from grabbing it and reading it. As it just arrived today I haven't been able to read it , but I would recommend the book to anyone as it's in great quality and it's quite cheap. Also everyone should be introduced into the mesmerizing world of The Brothers Grimm's. Do not miss out !

Amazing, but looking forward the complete volume.
I had a tremendous good time reading these stories. However I would like to have the complete volume with 211 stories in it. That's the reason I don't give it 5 stars.Oh and my favorite story? Cinderella. The way her sisters cut their feet/toes/calf is hilarious and in the end, when the birds poke their eyes, making them blind? That's what I call harsh punishment (lol)I don't have kids (yet) but I have little cousins and honestly there are some stories that kids needed to hear and process in order to get them thinking. NOwaday's fairytales tendencies gives them an illusory perspective of the world out there. Very well, they're children, but let's not let them believe everything is pink and roses for too long.

Grimm!
Some very odd tales. Decided to read some of these as it was one of those things that I knew so well by name, but couldn't say for sure what the book contained. Like many short story books, some will capture your attention, some won't.The Kindle book is free, so you have nothing to lose in grabbing a copy and flicking through a few stories until you find one of interest. Not something that you might want to read cover to cover, but at the same time there will be something that grabs you and pulls you in. If it doesn't, well it hasn't cost you anything to try, and at least you can say you had a go at reading it!If you are thinking it is like the TV show Grimm, it isn't. No USA cops in this book.

Misleading
This edition does not have the gilded edges as stated in the listing. So kind of takes the edge off the beauty of the book. Get the Barnes and Noble version. That’s better quality by far!
