"Updated" Stories (Read as watered down with less rich language)
Lovely art if that is what you are getting it for. If you are getting it to read to you children them skip this version. I have an older edition and the language is rich, eloquent and beautiful. Why do we insist on dumbing down our children? Trust me, kids can understand dynamic language just fine. This is a poor edition.

Not the Best
This edition has a big omission-"The Little Boy Who Cried Wolf" is not in this version of Aesops Fables. Regarding the illustrations-all characters are depicted as animals, which is correct in many, but not all of Aesop Fables. Text accompanying each story is only fair, not really good. I would not recommend this version. There are much better, and more complete versions of Aesops Fables available.

Abridged and incomplete
This is an inexpensive edition of Aesop's Fables, but it is not "unabridged" or "complete".1. This book contains only 92 of Aesop's fables. Most other editions have more than 200.2. Each fable takes up less than a page. About half of them are one paragraph.3. These are not "translated from Greek" but from public editions that have been paraphrased and in many cases, paraphrased badly.4. There are only 83 pages not 96. It's a very small, very short book.5. No dialogue. I have an edition from my youth that has dialogue. Much more fun for kids.6. Few illustrations. Only about a dozen of the fables have an illustration. The rest are just crammed on the pages together, sometimes three to a page. :(Because Aesop lived centuries ago and his work is not copyright-protected you will find many really bad copies of Aesop's Fables on Amazon. I thought I'd be safe going with a large publisher, but this was a huge disappointment.

WTH is this???
DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK as it bears no resemblance to Aesop's Fables. It is like someone tried to translate it to English not understanding the concept of the fables is to teach a lesson. Take this gem for example "The Fox and the Mask: A fox had stolen into the house of an actor, and as he was rummaging among the actor's possessions, he found a remarkable mask that was a fine imitation of a human head..... What a fine looking head! he cried. Pity that it lacks brains!" Yes. That is the whole story. And they are all like that. I have never returned an item to Amazon, but this will be a first.

A Must for Any Children's Literature Library!
I LOVE THIS VERSION of Aesop's Fables! The illustrations are gorgeous, and there are so many of the original tales. I buy this for every ohmigoodness-I'm-pregnant moment that my friends inevitably have. Sometimes, I will buy several at a time, just so that I have one on hand when the moment occurs.SUGGESTIONS: For the perfect children's literature additions, find a used copy of Udo Weigelt's "The Sandman" (it is sadly out of print), and also get Mary Engelbreit's "Mother Goose". Both of those books are just lovely, absolute musts!

Moral messages that transcend the ages
The world of fables for the west really originated with the slave Aesop and this marvellous collection of stories. In France, La Fontaine would probably never have existed had Aesop not existed. The fairy tales of Grimm and Andersson similarly drew inspiration from Aesop. The most famous of course is the eternal Tortoise and the Hare, but don't stop there as there are amazing tales here with philosophical and moral messages that transcend the ages.

Modernized Stories
As other reviewers have said, the worst thing about this is the fact that the stories have all been "updated". A lot of the charm was lost from the original stories, at least in my opinion. The morals do still remain, so it doesn't make them irrelevant. The pictures are extremely beautiful, too, so if you don't mind the changes to the story, then it's well worth a dollar.

The Bonus CD
The CD is an excellent addition to this book! Shockingly poor copy
Extremely disappointed with this version. It appears to have just been cut and pasted and self published with no care for layout or readability. Font is miniscule and multiple stories are just dropped onto each page. I was looking forward to sharing the stories with my granddaughter but this book is not suitable for children. Very disappointed

Now what is advertised
On the basis of the 'look inside' facility I bought this book because it contained around 200 of the classic short fables. What turned up is an illustrated book containing just 12 - 1 per page with a picture. Having just re read some reviews I see that others have been similarly duped. I can't imagine who would be the audience for this totally pointless publication. Refund required.

Great collection of stories. Dover publishing pages don’t hold with high use.
Love the collection of stories, as well as the illustrations, however this is our second copy that we have had to tape together. While the paper itself is a nice glossy feel, with lovely colours, the area where the paper attaches to the binding, feels more like tear away notepad glue. Might try to find a hardcover for our third purchase of this book.

Great read
I hadn't read these since school so it was fun reading them again. Naturally they're suitable for all ages but the younger children may have difficulty understanding some of the language used.

Great illustrations but not suitable for young children
I love the pictures but each story is very short only over 1 page. Very old English style of writing, bought it for my son but the version of the stories isn’t very child friendly (wolf eats a lamb etc). Should have gone with the usbourne book instead of being drawn to the pictures.
