Denis Leary plays an unfortunate cat burglar, who is abandonded by his partner in the middle of a heist and is forced to take an irritating Connecticut couple (Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis) hostage. He soon finds that he got more than he bargained for when the couple's blackmailing son and despicable in-laws step into the picture. Before long they're driving him nuts with their petty bickering and family problems. The only way for him to survive is to be their referee and resolve their differences before he can be nabbed by the police.

A truly underrated christmas movie
This film is flat out funny, and yet manages to be heartwarming without being sickly sweet.Dennis Leary as the cynical burglar is great. Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis are wonderful as the endlessly bickering couple. This definitely belongs near the top of the "I didn't know this was a Christmas movie but it's great" list, along with Die Hard and The Godfather.

Happy Disharmonious Christmas
First off, the DVD I bought is an American Region 1 import and you will need a compatible device to play it here in Europe. However, this is clearly stated in the product description and I was fully aware of the fact at the time of purchase. The film is a black comedy set during the Christmas season. It involves the highly dysfunctional family of Lloyd and Caroline and the unfortunate cat burglar Gus who gets trapped in their home. Gus soon finds that taking the bickering couple hostage is more trouble than he bargained for, and as ever more family members and relations arrive at the house, things go from bad to worse for him. It's huge fun to watch the intruder in the family home becoming the mediator for the impossible people inside of it.If you want to get away from the standard fare of syrupy Hallmark Christmas offerings, this should do the trick very nicely. It's not quite up there with The Lion in Winter for a dysfunctional family Christmas, but it does have a reasonably good script and a very solid cast. Judy Davis is excellent as always, Dennis Leary works well as the hapless burglar and hostage taker, among the supporting cast are the ever enjoyable Glynis Johns and Christine Baranski. As to the involvement of Kevin Spacey, I'll leave it to yourself to make of it what you will.

Films don't have to be sweet to have the Christmas spirit!
This is a great film. Fantastic humour, with every line perfectly delivered. Judy Davis and Kevin Spacey work so well together and you feel every biting comment and it makes you laugh. Denis Leary is simply brilliant, playing the referee to the warring spouses while hiding out in their house to evade the police. An alternative take on the Christmas movies, but definitely sprinkled with lots of the Christmas spirit.

Hostile Hostages - The Ref - whatever!
Oh this is such a good film. No matter how many times I watch this, I still laugh out loud. The family from hell, in a situation from hell but with comedy and dry humour throughout. Many moons ago my son & I saw this whilst in Canada and actually visited Niagara on the Lake - what a lovely place. Good memories every time I watch it and a bargain price too - FABULOUS

This film makes for a good watch. Those cringeworthy family get togethers and the old baggage of a domineering mother is a hoot. Few little swipes of social satire of modern America and a feelgood ending. What's not to like.

Fabulously funny - really funny, not the try-hard kind of funny
This is one of my top, top favourite films. I rarely watch movies, don't own a TV as I find it annoying, but I do treat myself to The Ref about once a year and (sadly - like a film anorak) can quote whole chunks of it. Cannot understand why this isn't more widely known - it's hysterically funny and has some food for thought, too.
