Orion by Walt Simonson 1

Finally
As others have said, this (and the 2nd vol.) is the only worthy successor to Kirby. In fact, I would say that it is superior to Kirby's 1980's, the Hunger Dogs. I know that is blasphemy; however, even Kirby's artwork on the last original run book, #11 looked dispirited since he knew the books had been discontinued. Simonson doesn't just give a rehash, he introduces new characters and themes that actually add and do not detract from the original. Check out the origin story of Kanto in Renaissance Italy, we need more stories like that to add to the canon. Having said that, I think he could have left the Newsboy Legion out.

Great follow up to the original
I read this almost immediately after finishing Kirby's original New Gods run, and it really does feel like a natural continuation, with the benefit of several decades of development in the medium. The art is also really fantastic. If anyone likes Simonson's run on Thor, they'll love this series too.(Slight spoilers) This first volume deals with Orion's parental issues, leading him to challenge Darkseid to a fight, and then the fallout from actually winning and taking over Apokolips. Much action ensues and Orion has a lot of stress in his life. This volume also contains several short stories that really add to the characterization of a lot of longtime players.

A Fourth World Lovers Must-Read
Orion. Anti Life. Canto 13. The storytelling in this book enriches and elevates, but you will love it for the art. Simonson re honors the origin stories and dives deep into some lesser characters in Kirby's cannon, bringing them to vivid life.

Better Choice Than The Omnibus For One BIG Reason
The Omnibus has the entire ORION series, but this paperback is your better buy even though you'll have to wait for volume 2. Why? Because this edition collects the Fourth World backup stories **in the order they were intended** vs. the Omnibus that lumps them all together one after the other, separate from the issues. They were meant to "echo" the main story in many cases, not be read in a vacuum.

Wild ride
So much fun. Simonson pays tribute to Kirby and takes the reader on a wild ride. Beautiful to look at as well.

Its a movie you want to see AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN!!......
Walt Simonson has been producing these ink masterpieces for 40+ years!! If you love the wide action layouts of the 70s/80s - Walt is bringing it in BUCKETS here!! i always love his layouts & you used his art as storyboards, no Directors would be needed, as the his work is THAT fluid!! Shoot it frame for frame!! I just got done reading Orion, ordered Vol. 2,...now while Im waiting, I'm going to read it AGAIN!! His work here i nothing but FUN!

Rich and Entertaining
I like this book because it is rich with story lines and information on the New Gods. If you have completed reading Kirby's Fourth World, this book is a good accompaniment for that.

Simonson at his best
Went for the trades rather than the omnibus version as these have more stories included.

Sensacional
O título deveria ser Novos Deuses! Walt Simonson faz um trabalho excelente (roteiro e desenhos), além de ter vários artistas contando estórias curtas! Muito bom!

Walt Simonson's gelungener Versuch an Kirby anzuknüpfen.
