The Jewelry and Metalwork of Marie Zimmermann

I don't see much of Zimmerman's work on the market, and frankly some of the pieces I have seen haven't been all that impressive. But it's always useful to learn more about metalsmiths, and she worked through a very interesting period from the beginning through the middle of the twentieth century, based in Manhattan.On first leafing through the book one is struck by the huge range of Zimmerman's work, from jewelry to flatware to hollow-ware to garden pieces and daggers, in silver, gold, copper, even aluminum and wrought iron. Then, seeing this work all together, her eye for proportion, balance, and surface becomes clear. Even some of the pieces I had been less impressed by, when seen in context with other pieces, look better. And in addition to showing Zimmerman's work, a good number of pieces by other people working in the same period and with similar inspirations are shown to develop the artistic context in which she worked. The photos are great, as is the book production by Yale.But what really makes this book stand out is the text. Deborah Waters was also the lead author of Elegant Plate: Three Centuries of Precious Metals in New York City - a similarly outstanding volume. The text masterfully presents Zimmerman's life in the context of American (and NYC) history and international art movements, and this focus on someone who is not widely considered a major figure in these movements shows them in a very interesting light. Waters is a former curator of the Museum of the City of New York, now Deputy Director of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, and also president of the New York Silver Society. I hope she's working on more books on silver and metalwork!

This book is very beautiful and thorough. I was impressed with the amount and depth of the text. Not just a picture book, very well researched and presented. FYI, the print is quite small, so if you have trouble with your eyesight, buy it anyway but be prepared to use magnifiers. The photos are gorgeous and beautifully reproduced. I am so pleased with this purchase!!!
