Verdi: Messa Da Requiem

Sorry guys and gals. I've been dealing with this Requiem since, at 14, I stumbled into a recording of it by Russian singers. As for tecordings, two reign supreme: the one with Caballe, Cosotto, Vickers, conducted by Barbirolli; and the Price, Cossotto , Pavarotti--Von Karajan. Dudamel hs not matured enough as a conductor to approach that level of excellence--and part of the problem lays in his choice of soloists, which lack the sheer vocal fireworks of the powehouse performers in other versions. It's too early to grant Dudamel's version five star status.I liked it, yes, but I like the versions I mentioned much better.

unable to view since I was led(or misled myself) to believe that the cd can be used with my HI-FI sound equipment since I have superior sound equipment but after seeing the Dudamel Requiem on TV at a friends house just for a little while I realize that I am better off with the TV version. I sent back my TV CD and requested a sound CD of the Dudamel requiem and my refund amounted to $6.50 meaning I had to pay almost twice for the sound CD..... I cannot afford the TV-CD of the Dudamel version of the Hollywood bowl version of the Verdi Requiem. I was fortunate to have been present for the August 13 performance at the Bowl. Dudamel's interpretation swept me off my feet. With the superb resources at his fingertips--the LA Philharmonic, the LA Master Chorale & 4 top-notch soloists--he brought out details of Verdi's score that I had not previously noticed while molding an over-arching unity in all the movements. It felt more like a new composition than the Verdi warhorse it's reputed to be. After the performance, I wondered if it was really as marvelous as I seemed to experience it. The DVD confirms it for me. And what's more, I can experience it over and over. I agree with the other review that Dudamel displayed not flamboyance but a mature and measured approach. It was really "Verdi's" Requiem.

I like Dudamel's interpretation and the singers are all in fine voice however the sound could be much better. It is uneven and comes thru muffled in parts especially when the chorus is being drowned out by the orchestra. I also did not like Vittorio Grigolo's over emoting during "Ingemisco". The Requiem may be operatic but it is not an opera and does not need the theatrics. Had the same problem with Angela Gheorghiu in another DVD version. In a piece like this the singers should not be calling attention to themselves.This is an okay performance with well-known soloists who are vocally good. But it pales when compared to the Price/Cossotto/Pavarotti/Ghiaurov DVD conducted by Von Karajan. That is the epitome of Verdi Requiem performances.I did like the behind the scenes insight from Duhamel but overall this DVD is only okay not great or even really good.

The performance is electrifying and Dudamel's analysis of the Requiem is an education.

The production from Dudamel is fantastic and the orchestra is top notch. This is one of Verdi's top pieces and should be seen by all,My only issue was the dvd, the sound quality is sub-par and you hear a constant "hiss"I had recorded the opera on my dvr when it was broadcast on PBS but it was deleted on error. I was glad to find the dvd was available but just a bit disappointed the sound was not as powerful as it was on the PBS broadcast.

Erster Eindruck: Welch ein Schrott! Ich schicke die Bluray zurück! Geht aber nicht; also eine positive Rezension (Boah ey! Tolle Aufnahme! Kann nicht besser sein! Super! Spitze! Klasse!) und dann versuchen, die Bluray privat zu verscherbeln.Was ist geschehen? Ich habe erst einmal die 'Knaller' aufgelegt: „Dies irae / Tuba mirum / Rex tremendae / Sanctus“. Und was höre ich über BD DTS 5.1 bei ziemlich hoher Lautstärke: Erst einmal so ein penetrantes Grundgeräusch, Typ Orgelblasebalg / laufender Kühlschrank. Huster und Schnauber stören nicht, da life! Aber was noch schlimmer ist: Die Aufnahme ist ziemlich verhallt - musikalischer Matsch! Hören eine Quälerei, zumindest: Kein Vergnügen. Von mir aus: Kein Stern! Naja, das Video ist schön: Der Platz vor der Basilika und dann die Innenaufnahmen! Aber ich will ja die Musik hören.Abends dann: Noch einmal von vorne! Ein ganzes Stück leiser – wegen der Nachbarn. Und erst mal in Stereo/PCM. Klingt tatsächlich nicht mehr ganz so verhallt. Auch unterm Kopfhörer nicht. Umschalten auf DTS, viel leiser als am Nachmittag. Nun ja, verhallt ist es immer noch. Aber es ist anhörbar, das doppelchörige Sanctus kann ich mit einiger Mühe und viel Konzentration mitsingen.Dann die Stücke der Solisten: Verdis Musik ist auch hier einfach bezaubernd schön dargebracht (z.B. 'mors stupebit' und Folgendes). Die Solisten sind wirklich gut. Das Orchester sowieso. Ich merke auch, wie präzise und souverän Maazel dirigiert.Zusammenfassung: Doch ein schöne Aufnahme, nicht allein, weil die Musik so wunderschön ist. Die Räumlichkeit in DTS ist atemberaubend – wegen des Nachhalls! Die lauteren Stücke des Werkes bleiben diffus – auch wegen des Nachhalls! Die akustischen Qualitäten der Basilika, von denen im Einlageheft die Rede ist („Geburtsort der Stereophonie und Quadrophonie“) kann ich nicht so recht nachvollziehen. Die räumliche Schönheit der Markus-Basilika setzt dem Ganzen beim Schauen (und nicht nur Hören) ein Sahnehäubchen oben drauf. Beeindruckend in Bild und Ton.Trotzdem ein Punkt Abzug - wegen des Nachhalls.

Diese Aufführung von Verdis Requiem ist vom künstlerischen her gut gelungen. Dazu die prächtige Kirche in Venedig, die dem ganzen Stück den passenden Rahmen verleiht. Der Punktabzug betrifft die akustische Seite. Im Gegensatz zu Opernhäusern oder Konzertsälen, ist die Kirchenakustik mit starkem Nachhall behaftet. Dadurch klingen Stimmen und Instrumente härter als gewohnt. Das hat aber nichts mit der Leistung von Chor, Orchester und Solisten zu tun. Diese bieten insgesamt eine sehr gute Interpretation dieses gewaltigen und schönen Werks. Lorin Maazel hat die akustischen Probleme gut im Griff. Man spürt auch seine Liebe zu diesem Werk. Wen die Kirchenakustik nicht stört, bekommt eine hochwertige Aufführung zu hören.

The Karajan version with Pavarotti, Ghiarov et al is unsurpassed and would surely be a good candidate for Blu-ray remastering. This performance is not bad and overall the recording is OK but it just lacks the punch of the old Karajan.
