Nicholson21476N Metal Ferruled Wooden File Handle, Size 0, 5-1/4" Length

I was looking for a handle for my 10" Nicholson bastard file and after a bunch of research I concluded I needed the size 0 handle. When it showed up, the diameter of the hole was too large for the tang on the file. But now I'm wondering: do I actually have a 10" file or an 8" file? I recall reading somewhere that the length of the file is supposed to include the tang but maybe not. The actual length of the usable part of the file is 8" which would mean I got the wrong size handle. Anyway, I didn't want to hassle with returning it so I cut a dowel 11/32" in diameter, which is the size of the hole in the handle and glued it in the hole, then I drilled a new hole 1/4" in diameter and then was able to pound the file into the hole and get a nice snug fit. The fit and finish of the handle is fine for my purposes, though it sounds like others have had issues which suggest poor quality control on the part of Nicholson. Taking everything into consideration, I settled on 3 stars.

This handle is for the large files Crescent Nicholson makes. A web search turned up a sizing guide, but based on reviews I was concerned I had measured the file wrong and had bought a size too large. It wasn't. It was just the right size.

I used it for my Hock burnisher. Worked great. It required me to increase the hole size to 3/8. I had to fiddle with some clamps and a bushing to drill it plumb. There was a very slight wobble after install which was removed by chucking up the burnisher in my drill press and sanding it down. It removed the awful yellow color which was a bonus. Applied a walnut stain. Looks great.

Had an old Nicholson file with a broken plastic handle. The price of a replacement plastic handle was a bit high so I used the Nicholson website to determine which wooden would fit. The wood handle was less than half the price of the Nicholson plastic handle, it fits and functions perfectly.

I always loved this type of file handle since I was a kid.

Installed it just as I did, back in grade school over 50 years ago with a similar handle and file. Excellent product!

Had to find a handle for a larger file. This one did the trick after a number of false starts with some other options.
