Garner's Dictionary of Legal Usage

This is my most used reference book. It goes into greater depth than Black's Law Dictionary. Each entry is a mini-essay complete with case citation. And Garner's writing is fantastic. He has the ability to make a reference book that I enjoy reading for leisure.

I like to use it instead of Black's Dict. because it has been edited by current users.

This is the most helpful book for legal writing in my collection (I'm a lawyer). I refer to it frequently to be sure I am using the best words for a situation or to provide authority to support my editing wordy legalese out of someone else's document. It's also a fascinating book to just browse through. If you have any interest in making your legal writing clear and persuasive and correct and you're willing to buck hoary tradition a little to produce a document that's not unnecessarily tedious to read, you must have this book.

Garner's Dictionary of Legal Usage should be in the office of any attorney, law clerk, or judge that is intent on improving his or her writing. This guide has become invaluable in assiting me in making more appropriate word choices in my briefs and e-mails. Garner brings clarity to the often unconsidered and useless conventions we attorneys use in our writing. Garner's Dictionary of American Usage is also a superb text that is useful for a wider audience, but this book is specifically geared to address the most common issues that arise in legal writing. As any lawyer worth his or her salt knows, precise use of the English language is key to being a succesful advocate.
