Renaissance Man

I'm not a good film critic. What I AM is an old widower who struggles to find enjoyable movies with a heart-warming message. No chainsaw murders, no society-destroying hate, no tech-enhanced terror. This movie just made me feel good. Three Cheers and SIX stars (in my book!)

I do not provide spoilers or discuss plot details. In broad strokes, though, the comedy is thin in this inspiring movie. The main theme is being resilient (and DeVito masterfully portrays that), and turning honest introspection into new beginnings.While DeVito and Gregory Hines turned in outstanding performances, this movie caused me to see DeVito in a new light. His brash persona is a common thread weaving together his acting roles in countless films, but he brings nuance and complexity to his role here. The rest of the cast does an excellent job, and in many ways this is a great study in character development and how truly great actors translate scripts into believable story telling.If you have ever experienced a major loss (loved one, job, etc.) and don't think you can come out of it, you may find inspiration and perhaps a bit or optimism here. I certainly did and consider this to be one (if not THE) best movie DeVito has ever made. Kudos to Jim Burnstein for a beautifully crafted script, and to Penny Marshal for eliciting some amazing performances from the cast.

I loved this movie. I watched it a long time ago and had been looking for it to buy. I am so glad I got such a great deal. This is a great film, one we will watch over and over. It was in great condition. Bran new.

My family watched this many times over the years & wore out our VHS copy. Great story line, good messages for kid and adult alike. I REALLY like this movie! Timeless.

A heartwarming movie that really has Danny DeVito at his best. The story of a committed teacher that engages and influences kids is uplifting and entertaining. While it's not Dead Poets Society it is a very solid movie.

This is my favorite movie with Danny DeVito. (It may have something to do with my being a teacher. )Bill Rago loses his job as an ad man and goes to the unemployment office. They find him a job as a teacher on a military base. His assignment is to help some of the soldiers learn to think/comprehend. You get to watch their improvement as they study Shakespeare and there are some rather touching scenes.

I am past the cut off age to join the military now, but I like military movies and this movie made me think that some people have hard lives, I am lucky I did not experience that from any of the actors characters' points of view. The ridged boot camp in the movie was cool and I liked Devito's character, he introduces William Shakespeare to the army men and woman in the movie. It talks about war and how this group of misfits come together to achieve a common goal, to trust each other, especially in a time of war and to learn how to work hard for what you want and not to be handed any for free. The drill instructor Hines really did not like Devito's character but in the end grew to respect Devito's reason for teaching these student soldiers. Regina.

Entertaining and some good life's lessons

Doesn't play in uk, does say when looking at description. However as on Amazon uk didn't think it wouldn't. Lesson learned.

this dvd does not play in uk, a total waste of money. Why wasn`t there a warning notices saying that this dvd from usa don`t work here in the uk.

The Double D's and Danny DeVito are very entertaining. I'm a retired teacher so that may color my opinion, but the comments on Hamlet and Henry V are really a treat and DeVito is always entertaining. A oldie but goodie. It's worth your time especially if you did do some teaching. Compared to a classroom, this is pure fantasy, but who cares? Fantasy is a wonderful dream.

had this dvd when it first came out and it went walking somewhere.so when I saw this on amazon I got it again. it has a good story line ,the actors did a good job . its a movie we will watch in the winter when we get snowed in.
