Obligatory "Model-not-a-toy" notice
Approximately 240 pieces, nicely molded in black, clear, beige, light and dark grey, and a sheet of water-slide decals. Instructions are in Japanese with nearly no English, but this shouldn't be a big problem as the assembly drawings are more than enough to put the kit together. The painting chart is somewhat more problematic if you do not read Japanese but still manageable. Colors are given using GSI and Mr Color numbers (and in some cases, mix ratios to achieve the right shade for certain parts) and if nothing else, the pictures here on Amazon as supplied by the manufacturer are a pretty good guide. There are enough pieces that it probably isn't a good first kit, complicated enough that it is not for those with a short attention sp--Ohh Shiny!, and while you could get away without it, this really deserves to be painted. Assembled, the model is about a foot long. This is the version of the SDF-1 from "Do You Remember Love" and not the iteration from Robotech; if you want the latter, you will need to do some scratchbuilding. (Regardless of how one feels about the cut-and-paste job Harmony Gold did to create that series, it is the trope namer for "Macross Missile Massacre", a show featuring F-14's that turn into giant robots cannot be bad, and taught its viewers that the penultimate way of saying "(unprintable) You" to the enemy was to punch them with an aircraft carrier.) Also, neither does the kit transform or can be built into the humanoid form, nor could it be readily modified to that shape; enjoy the model as as, or expect to spend quality time with a razor saw and sculpting. This is a view of the kit (currently) in progress. The model is built up out of discrete sub-assemblies which are then glued together, the more delicate joints are reinforced with a concealed frame engineered into the kit. At this time, some sub assemblies have been permanently assembled, others mocked-up with tape in anticipation of moderate surgery because I cannot leave well enough alone and have to make my own modifications... Most parts fit together very well, but some--mostly the smaller detail pieces--will need a little help from putty and files. The model is strong enough that it will not sag on its display stand, and the attachment to the stand robust enough that it will probably not need reinforcement or permanent attachment. Even in its current state, the kit is visually impressive, with lots of molded-in detail that would pop out nicely with only a thin black wash if one did not want to paint the entire model.Overall, I am very happy with this kit. It looks good so far, it has gone together very well, and is in the same (general) scale as the Mobius Battlestar Galactia models, so there is a nice feeling of continuity. Not that I would ever play with them of course, because I am (allegedly) an adult, and too old for toys that would be flown about with one in each hand making pew-pew noises surrounded by imaginary clouds of gnat-sized fighters...at least while anyone was watching.
