Children of the City: At Work and at Play

I purchased this book thinking there would be children of all races being spoken about. But, so far it is just the "white" children. I can't put into words the horrors of being a working child and the coarseness of their treatment. Although, I haven't finished the book I can say that the North does not care who and how they hurt people as long as their pockets are lined with gold.

The best part of this book was the strike that was so wonderfully coordinated in 1899 of many surrounding cities of New York including New Jersey. Highly recommended. These kids, ranging in age from approximately 9-15 were incredibly smart and resourceful.

Very good detailed book on the subject matter.

Good Read

There is never a dull moment with this book. The story of the Children of the City should clearly demonstrate to readers why this generation and their children had such wildly different values in regards to working, earning money, and attitudes towards authority.

I only bought this book because I heard that it was the inspiration the Newsies movie. There was a few interesting things in the book, but it isn't exactly great writing. It's kind of boring and it's basically a collection of facts written down. It was mostly the same thing over and over again.

Well researched and written. The book resonated with me as I'm old enough to remember doing in the 1940's much of what the street urchins did 100 years ago. Loved the list of the rich and famous who shared similar stories and references to their biographies which sound like good reading as well.

Excellent account of late 19th century life of children. Newsies is my favorite musical and I wanted to know the real story behind it.

El libro que inspiró el musical y la película Newsies, por fin está en mis manos!El libro viene en mediano estado, ya que venía con una mancha que parece ser de tierra justo en la parte en la que está el título del libro, llegó sin plástico y llegó con una raspadura leve en la portada en la parte inferior izquierda, pero nada de esto representa un problema, únicamente fue el hecho de que es un artículo de segunda mano y se vendió como nuevo.Está perfecto para los amantes de la historia, del musical y está perfecto para la colección!

Pretty cool, repetitive in some parts. But it is part of his style.

Llegó a tiempo y Perfecto

I looked into this due to my interest in Newsies. Though I knew from other reviews that there was only a little bit of information on that actual subject, I really wanted to read more into the era and the way children lived. I have yet to read it through but I started the first chapter and it was really interesting. It was a decent copy, a little old looking but it does have some age- though it did get a little more crumpled upon delivery.
