Buy it!!
It's the best and most thorough book I've ever read on cold weather survival. Very comprehensive! It's a "must have" to a home library for a person who is preparing for any kind of anticipated emergency. Have read once and re read parts 2-3 times. .

Worth a read by any practitioner in cold climates.
Wanted to stay current on my knowledge - well-written by very respected author/authority in the field. Didn't realize it was from 2006, though. Likely NOT many changes in practice since then - so still valuable information.

Recommended, this a MUST Read Book!
This is the 2006 updated edition, author James A. Wilkerson, M.D., was one of the authors and the editor of the 1986 edition.I read the 1986 edition and it was very good. "Book was written to an audience with a variable background. Hikers, climbers, hunters, fishermen, bicyclists, lost children - anyone who is cold, wet, tired and without the proper food, clothing and shelter - can suffer from hypothermia, a lower than normal body temperature that slows and eventually shuts down the body's vital system. This compact, comprehensive book covers hypothermia's causes and effects, and tells how to prevent, recognize and treat it. A chapter on cold water immersion hypothermia is must reading for fishermen, power and sail boaters, rafters, canoeist, and kayakers. Other chapters cover frostbite and other localized cold injuries such as trench foot. Hypothermia occurs more commonly in urban environments than in the wilderness. The very young are more susceptible to hypothermia.. The younger the child , the more rapid the cooling. The elderly produce less heat because they have a smaller muscle mass ... A room temperature of 60 degrees F (16 degrees C) may be inadecuate to prevent chronic body heat loss in the elderly." (Wilkerson, Bangs, Hayward, 1986)Link to the 1986 edition, if still available: Hypothermia, Frostbite, and Other Cold Injuries: Prevention, Recognition and Pre-Hospital Treatment Link to US Coast Guard DVD, if available: Hypothermia: What Is Is and How to Treat It

Comprehensive book about everything cold related
It's a very good book about the effects of the cold on the human body. It's a scientific work that's very useful for every outdoor enthousiast and prehospital and emergency caregiver. My first introduction with Dr Giesbrecht was from Bear Grylls who mentioned de doctor's name in an episode of man versus wild. This made me do some research and I found his book on Amazon.

This Book Could Save Many People
I like this book because there are extraordinary photos of individuals starting to shiver. That's warning number one. You will not receive many warnings. Next, for example I received severe frostbite on my left ear. At first you don't notice it. When you go indoors and remove your winter garments. My friends "kindly" pointed out that my earlobe was stetched about another inch. Most of the dermal cell's die and they will dump their poisons everywhere in the body. If the frostbite is bad enough that the skin turns black. First stage of gangrene. Limbs and other appendages might be cut-off to save the patient. The colour photography is exceptional. This book will save lives. Buy one, join a First Aid Group or become an EMT. This book is a must for any winter survivalist. This book should be read then reviewed in order to current on techniques or new procedures for saving lives.
