The Museum

Great story to begin to teach art appreciation
A wonderful story that introduces children to various artists and the wonders of their own imagination. Seems to be popular with the 3-year-old set as I've given it as a gift to twins and our own daughter, and it's frequently requested. The illustrations are whimsical and fun. As an art-history minor myself, I was pleased to see various styles of art referenced.

a classic
"The Museum" is a classic because the message will never grow old. A child's experience in a museum leads to all kinds of feelings. A perfect book to prepare a child for a museum visit and the feelings she or he may experience. Or it can be read after a museum visit to start a discussion. Or....it can be read for the pleasure of the words and the wonderful illustrations of Peter H Reynolds

A GEM
This book makes a trip to a museum as fun as it should be. Instead of staring at a painting trying to find the "meaning" that the artist wanted to convey, the heroine experiences all of the works of art viscerally. Each painting, sculpture or installation takes her on an emotional journey where she can feel what the artist was feeling when the art was created. The girl is sad, happy, frightened ,puzzled, bemused all in one trip and leaves with the museum inside of her, exhilarating her and inspiring her to place her own thoughts and pictures on a blank canvas creating her own works of art. The drawings by Mr. Reynolds perfectly capture a child's perspective of great works of art, which are meant to be felt and experienced not dryly analyzed and dissected. Grownups take heed art is much more than a dry academic list of data, it should be felt from the heart, as Mrs. Verde slyly reminds us in this fantastic tale.

the joy of looking
As a museum educator, I find this book the sweetest, funniest and least didactic. The simple, energetic words get right to the heart of what looking at art is all about, for children and adults. I have read it to children and they have fun hearing the words and acting out Peter's lively drawings. Peter is a master at capturing movement and the joy of creation. YSP
