Traditional Tattoo in Japan, HORIKAZU: Lifework of the Tattoo Master from Asakusa in Tokio

A fitting tribute
I own a number of Edition Reuss books, and they are all huge, heavy, beautifully bound volumes for the true bibliophile, and this one is no exception. What makes this one different from all the rest is that it features the work and life of just one traditional Japanese tattoo artist---Horikazu. The photography is, as usual, just fantastic... Almost 500 pages of photos showing the artist, his studio, his family, and most of all, all the complete body suits of his clients---it is never mentioned, but all are obviously Yakuza---the Japanese mafia. Lots of group shots, posed and candid, of the master and his blood family and the "family" of his human canvases. There is a good deal of text---interviews with Horikazu and his son who took over the business after his death...and very informative writing about the underground world of old school Japanese tattoo. Also included are fascinating historical photos and a large number of his preliminary drawings, all with explanations of Japanese legends. All of the text is in English, German, and French. Even though I own many books on the subject, there was still much to be learned from this volume---highly, highly recommended.

Quality photographic record
Good, detailed, photographic record of one master's work. I've returned other irezumi books that didn't live up to the hype in the description, but this one is a quality publication.

Worth the price, quality photographs.
Wonderful book, price is justified with interesting interviews/memories of Horikazu but also the many many photographs extensively researching the clients and the work. Full quality printed page photos, body suits and up close shots with a section for each model. This is a gem in my irezumi/Japanese tattooing collection, and no collection is complete without it.

For the Japanese tattoo lover
This is the book I keep on consulting when wanting to see Japanese tattoo art. It is full of extremely detailed pictures of the most beautiful Japanese tattoos. The thick glossy paper adds to the luxurious feel and makes it a feast for the eye.Although predominantly full of amazing pictures, there is accompanying text in French, German and English.Highly recommended book, would buy it again in a heartbeat.
