Child Airplane Travel Harness - Cares Safety Restraint System - The Only FAA Approved Child Flying Safety Device What is a CARES Harness? CARES Child Aviation Restraint System is designed specifically for aviation use for children age 1 and older who weigh between 22 and 44 pounds. These children are old enough to be in their own seats, but are too small for the seat belt alone to protect them and provide the safety they require during airplane travel;the FAA certification gives parents the right to bring CARES on board and use it for their children for all phases of flight: taxiing, take off, turbulence and landing on U.S registered airlines. Regulatory authorities around the world have approved the use of AmSafe CARES restraint however each airline may set their own rules based on staff training and aircraft type. Why use a CARES Harness ★CARES is the first and only harness type Aviation Child Safety Device to be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as an alternative to a car seat. ★CARES is an elegantly designed belt-and-buckle device that works in conjunction with the regular airplane seat belt and provides young travellers the same level of safety as a car seat. ★CARES weighs just one pound and fits into a 6″ stuff sack! It is easily portable, simple to install, adjustable to every size airplane seat, and usable on any window or centre seat in the airplane, except in the emergency exit rows. What is included in the hire? ★CARES harness ★A small carry sack ★Written instructions

So convenient
I traveled overseas with 2 toddlers and a ton of luggage 8 carry-on bags and 6 checked bags (We were moving overseas). These harnesses made our in-flight time MUCH easier. We were able to have 2 fewer items without the big bulky car seats, and the kids felt like grownups being able to sit in their own seat. The harness was very compact (a little smaller than a portable umbrella folded up in your bag.) and super easy to install. The only drawback that I found was that on some older jets the tray table was recessed inside the seat back and we were unable to secure the harness safely beneath the tray.We waited for that person to be seated then we politely asked if they minded if we placed the harness around the tray table when the seatbelt sign was on and we would remove it when it was turned off. We didn't have any problems with that.I would (And have) highly recommend this to anyone who wants to travel light and still keep their child as safe as possible.By the way, I used this on a 2 and 3 year old. My 2 year old is very petite (short and thin. I'd compare her to the size of a 15-18 month old.) and the belt fit somewhat loosely, so I would not suggest this for any child under 18 months. (the manufacturer may even have their own reccommendation, but i haven't checked it.

Easy to install.
I was worried about two things with this harness. First, I was worried this would be hard to install, but it's super easy -- just loop the red part around the seat, tighten and you're set to buckle your kid in. Second, I was worried there'd be a TV or entertainment system behind it (as one of the other commenters here mentioned), but in our case, the red loop was nowhere near the entertainment system. The loop needs to go around the seat at about the height of your kid's head, so unless you have a very tall kid, it shouldn't block most entertainment systems.Lightweight, easy to install, and keeps your kid nicely strapped in in case of turbulence. I like it.

Skip the car seat if your child meets the requirements
Most people think flying with an infant on their lap is safe, it's not. We flew with our 2 year old last year and lugged the car seat on the plane....it was a real pain. Besides hauling it through the airport, you have get it down the aisle without knocking someone out, then strap it down. This year we have 2 kids so car seats are even more of a problem.I went in search of a solution and found this FAA approved product. Not simple to use but if you can install a car seat you can do this. While I know the 4 year old is like very safe, not sure the safety of the 1.5 year old in a severe incident. Regardless it is the best alternative that I could find.

Must have, flying with a toddler! Leave the car seat at home.
My only regret is taking the car seat on the plane for so long and not using this earlier than I did, my son is three. He is nearing 40 inches so will outgrow it soon. It was so nice not to have to lug a car seat around and just grab this out of my backpack. We rented a car seat for the rental car, so easy. He loved it since he felt like a big boy and had the same belt as Mom and Dad. I was concerned about him sliding down as I read in other reviews but it was no big deal at all. He would just push himself up a bit but never seemed to mind. The flight attendant even assisted me in putting the strap on even though I easily could have done it myself and quickly. Never an issue with putting it behind the tray and when the person sat there, I just told her it would not hamper them from using their tray. I do really wish I had used this a year ago! Fantastic easy product.

great way to safely secure her in her seat
Bought this for three year old granddaughter since her family has been flying in last few months. It's a great way to safely secure her in her seat and I think contributes to her own sense of security. The seat goes over the back of the seat, so son-in-law asks passenger if it's ok, and there hasn't been a problem. It does not restrict table use for passenger sitting behind her.We had one flight on Alaska Airlines that attendant had never seen this harness, and she had to check with head attendant who also had never seen one. My daughter produced the paper/instructions so they could see it was FAA approved. So carry your instruction booklet, I guess, in case attendants question harness.

easy to install and truly help children stay secure when ...
These are worth the investment. This really helped my 2yr old understand he needs to stay seated and also made fetching food and toys from carry on bags much easier. The only downside is that the adjustment mechanism was right at chin height. This is only because he is young and maybe a bit too short for it. He also slid down in his seat which made the lap belt ride up. A quick fix is to bring a small square of non-skid rug pads. They are compact, easy to install and truly help children stay secure when needed.
