The best laid plans of mice, men and Tanya Degurechaff
I have sampled a number of new manga series this year and I would have to say The Saga of Tanya the Evil joins Kaguya-sama and Precarious Woman Executive Miss Black General as the three that have impressed me the most. An offbeat aside: has anyone else noticed that Black General looks like she could be a relative of Tanya's (albeit a relative Tanya would probably keep locked in an attic)? In this volume, Tanya has been given an elite mage command. She decides to make training so rigorous that most personnel will fail and maybe the brass will abandon the idea and send her to a nice desk job. She is reunited with Visha Serebryakov who's her new adjutant and who still believes Tanya is a good person. As usual, Tanya's schemes don't work out the way she intended; I noted in my review of Volume 1 that Tanya tends to succeed a little too well. She's also having physical and gender identity issues. Her body is not developing and she still has the mentality of her previous life as a man. As if all that weren't enough, it looks like she and her force are headed into another big battle. I did notice something interesting. Tanya's group is called the 601st Formation Unit. Strike Witches featured the 501st Joint Fighter Wing. A bit of tribute here? I don't know if crossovers are as big in Japan as they are in the States, but it might be fun if Being X were to create a situation in which the cold, cynical Tanya encounters the noble, dutiful Strike Witches. After the story, there are some behind the scenes interviews which provide quite a bit of detail. To sum up, Volume 4 is another winner for this superb series.

Once more into the breech, dear friends.
This manga has been a delight, both in term of visual images and opportunities to flesh out the caricatures within the story. The twin misunderstandings of major Unger and Tanya's doctor was precious! When lt. Kernel Lergan keeps seeing Tanya's efforts as the work of a warhawk I want to shriek along with her in dismay at his obtuseness. Can he really not see the inevitability of the coming conflict? Empire uber alles!

Great Series
I have several of these to write comments about and it will just be copy and paste from this one.If you have not watched the 12 episode anime/manga, make time and do so as that will help you with some background. The series of light novels and the graphics novels fill in missing parts and expands the Tanya world. For the Empire!
