When I say properly I'm referring to method: straighten the cable before placing in the cutter, then fully rotate the cutter only once or twice. You can use the cutter to pull the sliced jacket off the end but I find that removing the cutter and slipping the jacket off with a fingernail removes sideways pulling load on the blade (which is not needed anyway if doing that with a fingernail). I've stripped hundreds of ends with this and it still performs good as new. I will say if you use cheap CAT5/6 it might have a thinner jacket so no telling if several full rotations will cut too deeply into shield foil. **Q: Is the blade replaceable?** A: Specs say "Life Long Blade". I have had mine for more than 3 years and it works as good today as the first day. **Q: Will this strip just the outer jacket from shielded Cat5, leaving the inner foil shield and drain wire?** A: I don't have any shielded ethernet cable to test, but this tool strips without any damage to the conductors.
