does the job pretty well
We use this in our RV and it works pretty well. It's helpful that >10 years ago, before just using our smartphones, that we used to have a Garmin device because the way of interacting with the device is somewhat different from google maps. Mostly I like google maps better for a number of reasons: 1) much easier to find places, 2) shows alternate routes and makes it easy to understand how they compare (distance, time, tolls, etc.), 3) traffic is built in with intuitive red/orange indicators. The main advantages of the Garmin device are that it takes into consideration the dimensions of the RV and I think that the maps are already downloaded. Garmin has a preference for large roads, and, at times, would route us on those roads when a smaller road that turned out to be very RV-friendly was much more direct. I like having this Garmin to x-check google maps for RV friendly routes; although, it can be quite painful and time-consuming to reconcile this with google maps by adding in one or more way points to force the Garmin to go there. It would be helpful if the Garmin somehow indicated why it wasn't considering other routes (e.g., low overpasss). Also, a couple times the Garmin has lost satellite connection and it's taken 20 minutes to reconnect. Fortunately during those two times (in the 1 month we've been using it), our smart phones running google maps connected just fine.On the positive side, the screen is a nice size and clear to read. When you take the time to learn the interface, it offers some nice features. The voice is easy to understand. For highway exits, Garmin pops-up what looks like a photograph of the exit sign, which is quite useful. Apart from the two missing satellite connections, the unit has been very reliable.I'm hoping that someday google maps will allow the user to input vehicle dimensions and then we'll switch to google maps as our primary and use this as backup.

This device is AMAZING
What an incredible device!! My wife and I just finished a 4,000 mile motorhome trip thru 9 states using our newly purchased Garmin RV780. OMG! I must have exclaimed 50 times during the trip how much I love this GPS. The mapping is very intuitive and easy to understand and clear. That is no big deal because we all expect that these days. The shocking part is the amount of stored information… rest stops, campgrounds, things to do, restaurants and more and more. The topper was when my wife announced that she wanted a Starbucks. Yep.. there was a tab for it. I pressed it and found the location two miles away.. hit “GO” and followed the pink line.Near the end of the day when it was time to stop, I would hit “campgrounds”. Up on the screen would come the list of those campgrounds and RV parks closest and the list would scroll and update while driving. See one that you like? Press it and the information comes up. Like it? Hit “GO”.The downsides? There is so much information, that it is tempting to manipulate it while driving.. which is very distracting. Solution? I am going to get a second GPS and mount it on the passenger side. “Want your freakin Starbucks Dear? You find it!”One tiny complaint… There is a list of data points which can be displayed at the bottom of the screen such as altitude, time of day, time of arrival, distance to go, etc. You can only display one data point at a time. My previous ancient old Garmin allowed me to display 4 data points. Don’t know what they are thinking on this one…Otherwise, I give it 5 stars. I would give it 6 if I could… Buy it!

Great RV GPS
Previously I owned a Rand McNally RV GPS. The Rand McNally was always very marginal in choosing the best routes for a large class A motorhome. The updates were terrible and missed roads that had been in existence for years. The final update killed the operating system so the GPS just kept rebooting and never went into the navigation mode. Contacting Rand McNally was a joke. They responded with a form letter that basically said we’re sorry but too bad.So I chose the Garmin 780 to replace the Rand. The navigation still makes some questionable choices for the route so a little research is still needed but the Garmin is far superior to the Rand. Updates work slick via WiFi but if you don’t have a high speed connection could take a while. The Rand McNally required a computer for updates.Traffic and weather work when paired with your phone via Bluetooth. The voice activation and hands free connection for phone calls is not very good. The device has trouble understanding what you are saying. Stick with your phone for that function, it’s not really necessary for a GPS device. The “up ahead “ feature is nice for finding rest stops but the feature for finding hotels is not necessary if your driving an RV. Why is it there?Overall I’m satisfied with the Garmin and you probably can’t do any better for an RV specific GPS.

Great GPS
We bought this to take our large RV to the US last fall and wanted to try it out before reviewing. Found it to be accurate and didn’t cause and grief going through busy cities told us what lane to be in to turn at lights, speed warnings . Would highly recommend.

Important à savoir
Pour un long voyage avec notre roulotte. Aimé le fonctionnement simple et l'illustration des cartes. Alertes un peu exagérées des courbes dangereuses.
