Early account of the legends of Gilgamesh
This is a very old book (1880) about the records left behind from the kingdom's of Summer. As such, it is a bit hard to read; the style of English has changed after 140 years. Persistence is key. Compared to Poe, it should be easy.In here we find translations of 4000 year old cuneiform tablets, which in turn are the written artifacts of even older legends. The book of Genesis is more than 1000 years younger, but in it we find shadowy impressions of those ancient myths. So, we start with oral legends from five or six thousand years ago. They were written down. Presumably, Abraham learned these as a young man. He in turn started a new oral tradition, and so forth.Astounding.

Another account of the Gilgamesh story
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys ancient history and ancient literature. It was intriguing to think that the character, Eshtubar could actually be the historical Nimrod of Biblical notoriety. The illustrations were awesome. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that the conclusion some people could come to, after reading this is that most of the stories similar to those of the Bible, since they were written prior to the Bible renders the Bible false. I strongly disagree with this thought and would challenge one to look at the Bible more closely... There is a similarity, but the idea of idols and other Gods within Chaldean civilization is in direct opposition to belief in the Bible making it a completely dissimilar, and perhaps a more complete version of ancient belief in God.

An early view
An early treatment of the material. It is a somewhat misleading title in that the references to Genesis, much less Old Testament are "strained" at best. That being said, it is a scholarly treatment of the fragments available (for its time).I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a historical view.N.B. : the number of pages with only a word or so becomes tiresome. It may show the author's ability, dedication but delivers little to the overall understanding of the material.

Genesis and Nimrod
Whilst I appreciate that the Chaldean tablets are in very poor condition, I found the read was slow with lot's of gaps which made it difficult for me to follow what the author was trying to get, despite the gaps. As an explanation at the end of the chapter the author gives an interesting account of the foregoing, but I struggled to relate all the information of his story with what he had translated from the tablets. At times I wondered if there was another unnamed source that that was used to assist in making the translation of the tablets and his summary, tie up.

Chaldean Accountd of the Legends of Genesis
It was not George Smith's forte to rise in the academic halls of education, but his enthusiasm and his natural bent for cuneiform studies. It was not by a historical sentiment that Smith gave us the opportunity to look with him and begin the task of relating what we have in our Bible and compare the legends of a past civilisation. The illustrations are from that era so you will have a chance to formulate legend with some of the metaphors used in that past civilization. This, in turn, made me wonder what will our symbology and metaphor be, which will create the legends of our own times and locations. We do not as they did not, live in the myth of legend.Thank you.
