Fantastic
Fingering like a recorder, sounds like a clarinet, the only downside is it's range of notes is a little limited but it's a cool way of introducing a child to a clarinet from a recorder

An excellent, underrated instrument but I have one niggle with version 2.0
If you're reading this, you're probably not one of the silly people who denigrate the 'DooD' as a toy (as some reviewers seem to like doing). This is an instrument originally and ostensibly designed to introduce young players to the world of reed instruments as opposed to the recorder which uses a whistle or 'fipple'. Nuvo also make the jSax and Clarineo which are reed-based instruments. these now have a strong and proven pedigree after widespread use in schools. The quality of build is exceptional. have had one of the original DooDs for many years and was intrigued to find out that there is now Dood 2.0. So what's the difference? It's the way the mouthpiece now uses a stretchy silicon band instead of an actual clip. Beyond that I see no other changes BUT, for anyone who has, or who is considering a DooD, it is important to understand the difference. With what I will now call DooD 1.0, the clip which holds the reed in place can be opened and it then stays open as the reed is positioned. It can then be snapped back into place and the reed is secure and perfectly aligned. With Dood 2.0 there is a lever which stretches the band so that the reed can be inserted. The band is then lowered back into position where it holds the reed firmly in place.Nuvo's own excellent range of plastic reeds are notched so that they very easily fall into position for the most efficient positioning of the edge of the reed against the lip of the mouthpiece. There is no need to carefully position the reed, it happens automatically. This is a superb idea and works with 100% efficiency. So what is the niggle to which I referred in the title for this review? ... It's one which almost made me award 4 stars instead of 5.Let's consider the Dood, jSax and Clarineo as stepping stones to what might be termed 'proper' reed instruments such as clarinet or saxophone. MY USE OF THE WORD 'PROPER' IS NOT MEANT AS A CRITICISM OR JIBE. At first, with any of those Nuvo instruments you will use their own plastic reeds which are graded 1, 1½ and 2. From there you could easily transfer to a 'proper' instrument. However, what is never really pushed or explained is that the Nuvo instruments work very, very well with Eb clarinet cane reeds. By using them, once you get the hang of using a reed and the necessary embouchure, you gain two advantages:1) You can get a more expressive tone from the DooD (and Clarineo and jSax)2) You gain experience of how to use, care for and position a cane reed.It is that last point which is at the heart of my niggle. The clip system meant that once the clip was locked open, you could use both hands to hold and manipulate the cane reed into position - thus increasing your experience of their use for if, or when, you make the move to 'proper' instruments. Without the notch, a cane reed needs to be manipulated but there is also a tiny amount of flexibility to suit your preferred technique. That is NOT the case when using Nuvo plastic reeds. Cane reeds have to positioned exactly and moistened before use.More to the point, the stretch band has to be held open with one hand which makes positioning a cane reed much harder. If you look at one of my photos, you can see that the end of my thumb was white because of the amount of downwards pressure which needs to be used to hold the band open. That severely impacts on your freedom and ability to accurately position a cane reed.So - my overall conclusions?1) For using Nuvo's own reeds, the 2.0 system works well.2) For using cane reeds it's very poor and the 1.0 clip system is vastly better.3) For most people, I'm guessing they will stick with Nuvo's own reeds so that's why I still opted for 5 stars because the Dood (and all the other reed instruments) is superb. but for me . . . I'll stick with Dood 1.0.4) If you do try cane reeds, for heaven's sake buy a good, reputable brand such as Vandoren, Rico or Royal. Avoid cheap brands at all costs . . . and also learn how to care for cane reeds. they are easily damaged but they're really worth time time, money and effort.Good luck.

Musian (self taught) of 20 years, reviews:
This little turd is such an enjoyable toy to keep around.I've played.... basic rock band instruments for 20 years and .... as a creative type, got bored and wanted to expand. I started with the JSax, actually.I've been interested in brass and woodwinds on Ebay and at flea markets but always hated the prices and these D00ds..... made a seriously affordable beginner instrument.I see absolutely no reason why anyone should ever doubt getting this as a beginner/practice instrument.I used to wear Jenco jeans, staring at guitar magazines, having a $5 allowance, waiting for a day to buy at least a $100 guitar, this Dood.... is revolutionary, to me. It is technology making instruments affordable to anyone. Is it expert quality? HELL NO, that artisan stuff is done with metal and cellulose to a level of detail that I don't even know about....Beginner?Hell Yeah!Super easy to play and learnReally fun to fart around withAbility to record for a song???..........................not exactly.... timbre is ....PLEASANT for the parents while the child, or spouse practices. It isn't harsh or too loud. This, according to me, a 20 year musician of guitars and drums, not brass, not woodwinds..... It is fantastic.Super easy available embouchure, and from my experience from this company, they send a few different ... impressive reeds.Look, I like to play with new instruments... I intend on all of my new toys being from this company because of the quality, ease of play and learning.... and I really think this company would be great for schools.
