JAWBOX was formed in Washington, DC in 1989 by guitarist/vocalist J. ROBBINS, bassist KIM COLETTA, and drummer ADAM WADE. The trio released their debut 7" in 1990 as a split between Dischord Records and their own label, DeSoto. Over the next three years, Jawbox put out two albums and three 7" singles. Grippe, released in '91, was the band's first full-length. Second guitarist/singer BILL BARBOT joined the line-up in time to record '92's Novelty. Both albums were released on Dischord. ZACH BAROCAS took over drumming duties that same year, performing on For Your Own Special Sweetheart, which was released in 1994 on Atlantic Records. Recorded in Hoboken, NJ with JOHN AGNELLO in winter of 1995, Jawbox was the band's fourth and final album. If Sweetheart presented the band's music in a straightforward and unembellished state, Jawbox found the group more open to experimentation. Arrangement-wise, it contains some of the band's densest compositions ("Chinese Fork Tie"), but also some of it's most concise and tuneful songwriting ("Excandescent"). While the basic tracks were recorded more or less live, the songs were later augmented with sounds-toy drum kit, Hammond B3 organ, and saxophone-that were outside of the band's established palate. Long out of print, Jawbox has been remastered on LP by DAN COUTANT at Sunroom Audio and is reissued by Dischord and DeSoto Records.

... although the first two records are absolutely essential and perfect in their own way
This is Jawbox masterpiece although the first two records are absolutely essential and perfect in their own way. The sound that they achieved and the level of mastery over their instruments and tightness as a band are on full display here. This album is better than those by Fugazi or Nirvana, although those bands achieved far greater success. J Robbins is an extraordinary songwriter and powerful rock vocalist, his lyrics are so cryptic (similar to Cobain) but he sings and shouts with such emotion that you GET IT. Jawbox is unquestionably the most underrated rock band of all time, a best album list of the 90's that doesn't feature them is a joke. The jazzy offbeat rhythms melded with angular guitars and aggressive vocals is one of the most unique combinations and this album is the greatest swansong of all time. You don't follow up perfection. For me this album is everything they worked towards and as I indulge in it's bliss I struggle to find artists who can duplicate it's energy twenty years later.

An amazing record
This is simply an amazing record. Don't expect to find any "throw away" songs on here. The recording quality on this record is far better than on "For Your Own Special Sweetheart," their 1994 debut record on Atlantic. This record has a slightly different feel than the Sweetheart album, but the differences are not too drastic.

Excandescent star swallowing your heart
This record changed my life, and it sounds as good today as it did when I first heard it 9 years ago. It's twin slashing guitars darting in and out of a mind-blowing rhythm section, with a glaze of sweet yet slightly ominous melody hanging over it all. Its simple on the surface, yet ridiculously complex underneath. Its shimmering and grand one moment, descending into visceral aggression the next - the perfect synthesis of brains meeting brawn. It's not punk, its not post-hardcore, its certainly not emo - its just a band fully realizing the breadth of it's potential and striking gold.

With a slightly different line-up the sound is really twisted (a good thing. ) These guys are so very good
I have listened to the earlier Jawbox but I had never heard this album. With a slightly different line-up the sound is really twisted (a good thing.) These guys are so very good. The album is relentless.

In another time and place...
I recently dug this album out of my record collection. All I can tell you is WOW. I had totally forgotten about what a powerful album this is. JAWBOX was released the summer before entered my senior year in high school. It was also the summer that I fell in love for the first time. This record was kind of the soundtrack to all of that. For about forty five minutes I was back in the summer of 96. Needless to say it was all down hill from there but it still nice to conjour up some of those feelings with this album. CHEERS!

Veramente emozionanti
