180 Days™: Spelling and Word Study for Second Grade: Practice, Assess, Diagnose

Thank you to everyone who's taken the time to review the 180 Days of Spelling and Word Study series. As the creator of these books, I want you to know I appreciate all your kind words and take your suggestions seriously. I'm very excited to announce that I've started creating "kick-off" lessons for each unit and am publishing them for free on my YouTube Channel: 180 Days of Spelling & Word Study w/ Mrs. Rhoades. Each interactive lesson introduces the new word list, draws the viewer's attention to important spelling patterns, rules, and affixes, and provides kid-friendly definitions for the vocabulary. I hope you enjoy the videos as much as my students do!

180 days is my kids favorite curriculum. We buy 10 for their grade levels. There are so many options to chose from. My children have tried many curriculums over the years. They find 180 days both enjoyable and easy to know what to expect.

So far I am loving this workbook. It has a format both my kids and I enjoy. I pay little attention to grade level but have the kids working through grade levels, definitely more quickly in certain subjects. My 6 y/o is technically First Grade age but she is flying through the lessons in this Second Grade workbook, and seriously her skills are rapidly increasing. I’ve been trying some different materials and so far this one is closest to the stuff I loved as a kid, and I’m glad to see my kids are loving it, too.

My son is homeschooled; we used a well-known phonics program which was great for teaching reading but not as strong on spelling. I now use this series as a supplement. I chose to start with 2nd grade, even though my son is 3rd grade, because, frankly, he couldn’t spell well. His spelling is improving tremendously, and he’s writing more because of this program. While each week’s structure is repetitive (e.g., fill in sentence, synonym/antonym, category, original sentences, suffix endings, and analogy w/ add’l content like parts of speech, contractions, verb tense as you progress), that is a plus in my book. My son knows what to expect and how to do it. In addition, I add a spelling quiz at the end of each unit to make sure he’s retaining the spelling words. So far, he’s doing great. I love this series.

I love that this is a short, quick practice for spelling and vocabulary. I love that my son is able to complete it mostly independently now that he has figured out the process. I wouldn't use it as a stand alone language arts curriculum, but it's a great supplement for my 2nd grader.

This workbook is well made and very handy for teaching children different tenses and endings, as well as generally growing their vocabulary.

I have been using these 180 days of spelling and word study workbooks with my kids, at their grade level, since we began homeschooling 4 years ago, and I don’t see us stopping. The variety of vocabulary and spelling activities available keep them sharp and challenge them at their appropriate levels.

I'm a homeschooler and I work with the children of friends. I have taught for years (so much for being retired!). These "180 Days" books in different subject are incredible -- some of the best I've found. The spelling books for ALL the grades are extremely well thought out. Highly recommended.
