Justice League: Throne of Atlantis [DVD] [2015] [2018]

Solid but unspectacular
DC have knocked out some high class animated features in recent times but this isn't really one of them - it's a bit more of a by the numbers effort but is still watchable enough. If follows on from the previous film - Justice League War - which strangely/sadly has not currently been released in the UK. You can import it of course but it's not essential to have seen it to get on board with this one. As the title may suggest, this is another pop at telling the origin of Aquaman who at the beginning of this tale is merely Arthur Curry, who has been raised by his father on dry land and seems to have little or no idea of his Atlantean heritage. In the early going, a U.S. sub is attacked below seas, some missiles go missing and the Justice League are called in. This version of the team features Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Cyborg and Shazam. What follows is a brisk story of Atlantean in-fighting which inevitably spells bad news for the humans living above the seas and the League who are smack in the middle of it all. A fair amount of fighting naturally ensues, all leading to the usual grandstand, city levelling finale. Along the way, Green Lantern and Shazam bring a bit of light relief which is welcome in a relatively violent film (although not as graphic as some other recent efforts). The animation is good, the voice cast are solid enough with Nathan Fillion as GL being the standout for me although that's probably down to personal bias as much as anything else. Overall, it's decent enough but lacks the real wit or invention to make it truly memorable. Stick around for the post credits epilogue and a pretty good stack of Blu Ray extras as listed below.......Sneak peak at Batman vs RobinVillains of the Deep - 11 minute look at Black Manta and Ocean MasterScoring Atlantis - 30 minute doc on the score for the main featureNightwing and Robin - a nice little deleted scene of sorts2014 New York Comic-Con panel - 26 minute Q&AAs always these days, there's a few episodes from animated series of the past included......The Brave and The Bold - Aquamans Outrageous Adventure! The Brave and The Bold - Evil Under the Sea!Aquaman - Menace of the Black Manta and The Rampaging Reptile ManJustice League Unlimited - Far From Home

Like they have been stretched to look taller lost some ...
There was something missing in this movie. As you might have guessed this is more Aquaman's story, the Justice League are more side characters. Also I am not really a fan of the character design animation; to me they look a bit out of proportion. Like they have been stretched to look taller lost some their body width (narrowing their shoulder noticeable).I do like the darker tone on the costumes. Especially with Superman, it makes him look harder, it goes with his more coldly and arrogant attitude he seems to exude in this series. However I don't like the more cybernetic look of Batman's costume. Wonder Women seems to look older in her face this animation, but seem to have the body of a 13 year as Wonder Women, and look like a 40 year old as Diana Prince. The Flash, Cyborg, green Lantern and Shazam seem to look ok to me right to me. Shazam they seem to have got right he acts and talk like a 10 year old in an adult body, he is a 10 year old in an adult body. GL seems to have got dumber since the last movie.Actually since the last movie things seem to have happen at warp speed. We saw subtle sparks frying between Superman and Wonder Women, but by the start of this movie they are already together. The Justice League came together to defeat Darkseid, but since then have been too busy in their own careers to work together. The movie felt rushed as well. The thing that really let this movie down for he was the dialogue. The movie is set for ages 15 and above, not there is more than enough action, violence, killings, stabbing, slashing limbs off and cutting people in half to warrant the rating. The dialogue though looks like it was written by a 10 year old. An example GL probably used the worst pick up line ever and it worked? Looking at the movie as an action fest stops me from getting bored, and let me watch it all the way through, but this was nowhere near as good as War or Flashpoint.

Competent but missing a little spark
As a motion picture telling of the new 52 origins of the current Justice League line up I felt that this was a competent job, some of the characters were handled well, I liked Cyborg, and the back and forth between Batman and the Green Lantern, the story is an origin for Aquaman, and in places it felt seriously compressed, but as a whole it did the job required of it.The animation and action scenes were nice to watch, but not the most involving or impactful ever seen. The voice cast was also good, but there were no standout performances that defined each character.I feel that this was a step back from the previous feature Assault on Arkham, but is definitely worth having for fans of the DCAU.

a reasonable animated film
This is a reasonably entertaining animated film, depicting the origins of Arthur Curry becoming Aquaman (a prince of Atlantis). This movie is based on the 'Throne of Atlantis' story-arc from 'The New 52' comic book series by DC Comics (written by Geoff Johns), and it serves as a sequel to the film 'Justice League: War'.The story concerns Arthur Curry discovering his true heritage, as an Atlantian, and this occurs just as Curry's villainous half-brother Prince Orm (known as Ocean Master) sets about to take over the city of Metropolis. And so Curry, now as Aquaman, joins forces with the newly formed Justice League to defend humankind from conquest. The animation is good, as is the voice acting. But I found the story to be rather weak and derivative. This movie bases itself in the 'New 52' continuity, which I'm not especially a fan of. Additionally, the characterisation of some of the Justice League members is under-developed. Of course, I'm sure that some viewers will thoroughly enjoy this film ... and if you did, then I recommend the following sequel: 'Justice League vs Teen Titans'.Overall, I'm glad I watched this film. It's fun, and well made. But there are better DC animated movies.
