PRETTY THINGS / GET THE PICTURE Featuring the hoarse vocals of Mick Jagger-lookalike Phil May and the stinging leads of guitarist Dick Taylor (who actually played in early versions of the Rolling Stones), The Pretty Things' first two albums (both released in 1965) remain the group's most exciting and influential efforts that, quite frankly, make the early Stones sound positively pedestrian and genteel by comparison! Here they are together on a single CD that includes the Pretties' first-rate original hits (Rainin' in My Heart; Honey I Need and Don't Bring Me Down, later covered by David Bowie on his Pin Ups album) plus ripping takes on numbers by Bo Diddley (Roadrunner; Mama, Keep Your Big Mouth Shut, and She's Fine, She's Mine) and Willie Dixon (Big Boss Man)! Double CD, the first two Pretty Things' albums. The Pretty Things (1965) - Get the Picture? (1965)

This is one of the most under-appreciated rock bands ever!
This 2 cd set contains the first two albums by a largely unknown or forgotten British rock group known as The Pretty Things. Those albums were originally released back in the mid 60s, when The Pretty Things had a "garage band" sound. They sound a little like early Yardbirds or Stones, except that there is a harder edge to these songs. It's outrageous that this band never rec'd any real airplay in the US. They were very original and their first several albums are must-haves for any serious rock fan.I would recommend getting this set instead of buying the discs separately. It's a nice attractive package and the sound is great, not muddy or muffled. For some reason they decided to put the band's second album cover on the front, with the first album cover on the back. I guess they thought the "Get the Picture?" album cover looked more attractive? At any rate if you like mid-60s garage rock you'll definitely dig this.

Fifty Years of Non-Conformance
A wonderful glimpse of a part of my youth that I never had the chance to hear until now. Keep in mind that this material is from the mid 60's during the Beatles, Kinks, Rolling Stones heydays. The guys were poorly named to cross the Atlantic and too frightening live for most of the British music establishment. The fact that they still exist and have just released a new cd is a credit to their talent and persistence. Some of my favorite all time music was made by this band. Give a try.

This Is The One To Get!
If you like raunchy, fuzzed out Garage rock, London style, then Get The Picture is for you. It only falters when they try to be poppy or bluesy -- and not TOO badly on the latter. The debut album is a bit weaker than Get The Picture, with too much thin-sounding cod Blues, but worth getting the double for the great songs that ARE on it.

My Daughter and Grandson Dig it, and So Do I!
This is a double CD, and consists of the first and second Pretty Things records. It's a solid R&B grungefest! Fans of the early Pretty Things will not be disappointed, no sir.Guitarist Dick Taylor, who was in an early version of the Rolling Stones, and vocalist Phil May are still fronting the Pretty Things today. And fans of the Mekons will also remember Taylor from several versions of that band.Old? You bet! A solid groove and money-maker shaker? ABSOLUTELY!

it was good to get a good over view of this forgotten band and I am sure more tracks will grow on me as I have only played once.

Great Albums
These are both great albums. Some people claim the early Pretty Things were every bit as good or better than the early Stones. While I don't think they're quite that good, they got closer than any other band.

Must Have
A must have purchase for any 60's collection. The blues explosion in this CD is clearly dominant in this band's sound. A step back into time.

Four Stars
The "thin" British guitar sound at its best. Some great bass lines.
