Niagara Hardcover – August 21, 2018

I am from and still live in Niagara. It is amazing what and outsider can see of a locals home town. I love this book. One of the best photo books I own. I'll probably get more and give them as gifts.

Saw the exhibition that accompanied this book . Poignant and funny by turns, it was one of the best recent photography exhibitions i have seen .The inclusion of found love letters and the swans made of towels, stopped the collection from just being a collection of expected shots of odd looking couples. While the majestic shots of the falls themselves somehow became a comment on the frailty of human romance....

More limited scope than Sleeping on the Mississippi but still excellent. Book arrived in nearly perfect condition.

With 104 pages this book only has thirty-six photos by Alec Soth. But don't let the small number of images put you off owning a copy because this is a book that has to be considered from the front cover to the back.To start with Soth designed it and it was probably his idea to avoid a dust jacket and go for an embossed title and panel for a pasted-on color photo. After the title spread there is a five page essay by Richard Ford followed by the photo pages, three of which use notes that Soth got from strangers while working on this Niagara assignment, next Philip Brookman contributes a six page essay on the cultural aspects of the Falls. Just before the book ends there are two spreads that, for me, make it all come alive. These are background notes handwritten by Soth and included are nine addition photos he took and one he was given by somone in a bar. Included also are some very personal notes he was given by strangers. Thumbnails of the Niagara photos with their titles run down the sides of these four pages. The back cover has an embossed quote taken from a handwritten note on page eighty-three.I thought Soth's intriguing images are definitely given extra credence by being presented in this particular format. His design, printing, paper, binding, contributor essays all work to enhance the photos. This is not a unique way of doing things but in this case I think it works perfectly. The photos are one to a page and amazingly, with so few, the impact the Falls and motels have on the folks who go there really comes across. This is my favorite Alec Soth book eclipsing the classic "Sleeping By The Mississippi". In addition to the photographs in contains Soth's notebook pages at the end of the book. The exterior cover itself is a lovely, faux-leather type material that adds to the Niagara seediness. If you like Eggleston and Shore, Soth fits in perfectly.

i think soth has produced a better book than his highly acclaimed 'sleeping by the mississippi' here. it seems less derivative, less self-conscious, and more mature. my main criticism would be the pictures of the falls itself, which don't seem to fit and end up being a distraction from the true heart of this work - the odd people, buildings, and objects that give definition and vision to the area.

What makes this book interesting is that it is significantly different than 'Sleeping by the Mississippi'. Another great book by one of the most promising young photographers.

The acclaim and good reviews for this book are mistaken - it is average work by an above average artist who his a sophomore slump with this, his second book. Sleeping by the Mississippi, as derivative as it may be, was deeper and more soulful than this work which offers not much new in contemporary photography.

Ce n'est pas le livre de Alec Soth qui m'a le plus attiré au début, mais une fois en main, j'ai changé d'avis !La couverture est très agréable avec une photo collée, le livre est dense, très bien imprimé (Steidl), les photos sont superbement mises en valeur (une photo sur la page de droite et n° de page sur celle de gauche).Pour voir toutes les photos avant d'acheter le livre, il suffit d'aller sur le site de Alec Soth dans la rubrique "Niagara".Les notes personnelles de l'auteur dans les 4 dernières pages sont très intéressantes en donnant beaucoup d'explications.Le tarif actuel de ce livre (moins de cinquante euros) est appréciable pour cet auteur et cette qualité.C'est un grand livre !

Il libro è meraviglioso. Stampato benissimo con delle foto incredibili. Il libro è arrivato in anticipo ed era perfettamente imballato.

Tutti i libri di questo originalissimo autore sono una vera sorpresa. In senso positivo.

Along with Sleeping by the Mississippi, a true masterpiece.

Un libro sicuramente da acquistare per chi apprezza il lavoro di Alec Soth, uno dei fotografi contemporanei più interessanti e pure un ottimo editore.
