James Tissot

Very Good Monograph
A very large volume on James Tissot from FAMSF, an artist probably not so well known "across the pond." It covers his whole career; the catalogue of plates is organized by subject. The only questionable aspect is the color of the plates. I compared them to other books I have on James Tissot. Some were better, some were worse. Overall, they are generally good, but too dark, obscuring details. In sum, a very good book on James Tissot, which would be great if the color was reproduced better.

The book covering the Tissot Exhibition
I has, unfortunately, never heard of Tissot before. My husband and I were in San Francisco back in October, 2019, on vacation, and an exhibition of Tissot's work was being shown at the Legion of Honor. A terrific friend gave us two tickets to go and visit the Legion in general; we didn't have to visit the exhibition. Thank God we did!!! I may not have heard of Tissot before, but I came to realize I'd seen his work before. Yes, there were the drawings of the lost Ark, used by Spielberg in "Raiders of the Lost Ark"; I had never known that before. However, it was the various portraits throughout that caused wonderful recognition. Oxford World Classics had featured portions of these various paintings on the covers of their past editions to classic English literature. In my case, used on the covers of novels by Anthony Trollope, a great and a favorite author of mine. This book brings the exhibition together, to bring back the memory of seeing it. Crisp pages, a sturdy spine and terrific articles about the painter's life throughout the book. Worth every penny buying, imo...

The reproductions are a dissapointment
So, I have not read the text yet. I saw this collection of paintings in SanFrancisco last year. I took some cell phone photos of the paintings. When the book arrived, I was saddened by the low quality of the reproductions. The printer pushed the vibrancy of the images and lost all the subtle colors. Dresses that were deep purple are printed black. Foliage reads like a patch of shadow when it should be a detailed collections of greens. Such a loss. Tissot put great care into details and subtle color, but the photographer/printer let it all go. I guess with the high contract images, you do get a chance to dwell on the composition of each painting. Tissot was a master of composition. I recommend finding Tissot's work to view in person. Take your own photos.
