no salt added! love black lentils, convenient item to have in pantry
Dry lentils dont take long to cook, but I like having some canned lentils on hand for times I want extra quick and convenient preparation. These organic black lentils are just that, there is no added flavoring or sodium. Just packed with some water, and they arent swimming in it. So you are actually paying for lentils and not water.I add them to whatever I feel like. Sometimes I make burgers with them, sometimes added to soup, sometimes over salads. I have added them to meatloaf/meatball/hamburger mix to boost fiber and stretch the protein source. I also toss in with vegetables or over rice. Again, just works in everything. I live lentils!

now a great experience
First order received: 10 of the 12 cans are dented. Cannot consume safely nor donate to a food pantry. Shameful such sloppy service. Low standards to allow faulty food for sale and distribution.Replacement order/2nd received: Perfect condition and at no cost. Had to toss the original dented pack but Amazon earned 5 stars today. Thank you for great customer service!

these little lentils taste terrific, are USDA organic
Very welcome addition to the kitchen cupboard...these USDA organic small black lentils Westbrae Brand come packed to the top in a 15-ounce can and are ready to eat. The ingredients are water, organic black lentils, and sea salt. Nutrition info is:Servings per container: 3.5Serving size: 1/2 cup (or 130 grams)Calories per serving: 90Fat (trans, saturated) 00. ZeroCholesterol: 0. ZeroSodium: 125 milligramsTotal carb: 16 gramsDietary fiber: 8 gramsSugars: 1 gramProtein:7 gramsSince Beluga black lentils are said to have a higher protein content (24 grams per serving?)You can see that these small black lentils are different from Beluga...I was glad to see that nice blue label on the website for Heirloom Beluga lentils, glad to learn about them and would like to order them. What I received from this webpage was small black lentils, not Beluga. Instead of belugas,I received Vegetarian organic black lentils. Not that I'm sorry about it; the can label has a wonderful recipe for soup, and a vegetarian diet pyramid for nutrition. These small black organic lentils are delicious and nourishing. I recommend them to you to try, and I'd like an opportunity to order and try the Heirloom Beluga lentils as well sometime. You'll like the small organic black lentils, many ways to serve them.

Beware!!!!!!
I've ordered these 20 times and they are usually really great. However the two cases I got on 7-23-22 had a very strong weird smell on the labels, the cans, and the lentils.Like the other reviewer said the lentils were an odd consistency like gelatin and had a grey tinge.I didn't feel comfortable eating them so I returned them. Then 2 days later saw them at King Soopers and those cans had the same very strong odd smell so didn't buy them.Westbrea please look into this and send a new supply so I can resume buying these!!Thank you!!!Edit......went to Whole Foods in Broomfield colorado and the cans at that location also have the very stong weird smell and no one is buying them

Good product, delivered by Neanderthals.
Amazon dented EVERY can. How do you even DO that?

Love that salt free organic natural flavor!!!
I heated and served these natural, salt free, organic lentils- right out of the can. You don’t have to be watching your salt intake to enjoy this product. The natural flavors stand on their own. For variety, rice or salsa may be added.

Cans only half filled with lentils, the entire top half all water!
There seems to be a manufacturing fault or choice to save money, resulting in only half of each can holding lentils. I feel cheated as a consumer! It is easy to find cans of similar foods (beans, peas, etc.), properly filled (drain the excess water, duh!). I never noticed this in past years of buying this same product. Sure, it makes sense to cook from dried lentils at home, but canned foods are important to those unable to do the extra work. This is more a can of lentil soup than a can of the staple food. Very disappointing. I'l remove this note, if things go back to what is right.Below is my original, 5 star review. Changed to above when July, '19, began finding half-filled cans consistently:Better than "standard" brown/green lentilsThese are delicious black lentils, cooked in water with only sea salt (zero preservatives) added. They are smaller, darker and rounder than the lentils found in most other canned lentil product. At many US grocery stores, only dried green lentils are available. They have a softer, more tender texture, (less tough skin around them), and a rich flavor. They have a slightly pepper-ish taste familiar to lentil fans. I prefer the taste and texture of these over the flatter, brown or green, "standard" american lentil.Like rice, lentils come in many varieties: green, pink, yellow, etc. These are some of the best I've tasted; some call these black lentils "caviar lentils". I'd prefer to buy these unsalted, but, for the ease of ready-in-a-can, these are terrific!
