No issues at all with this book - one of the queens of bodice-rippers
First, before I go any farther, I know there is a new crop of readers out there who never read the original bodice rippers that were written just like Kerrigan Byrne writes hers. Yes, there will always be dubious consent, but with or without the dub-con, there is NO rape in these books, and it really ticks me off when readers call it that. Rape is harmful, it leaves lasting physical and emotional bruises. Are you seeing any of those things in this book? No, I didn't think so. Good grief, if you don't like dub-con in a truly good Historical Romance, then don't read it.This book, Oh My. My Kindle smoked and wheezed over this one, but we made it through to the end. What an angst filled journey this was. I SO enjoyed this book that I'm now going to turn to the next one in the series, which I believe is The Highlander. I know these were written a while ago, but I love the way the author treats her H and h. I like her POV so that we get to see and feel everything, not just from one point of view. I also enjoy the way she wrote this book, as Argent was a dark, dark character, introduced in the first of the series, and Millie is anything but dark. The author did a wonderful job of showing the contrasts and the similarities in the two personalities.Kudos to the author for a book well written and well-enjoyed...and now I'm on to the next one!

Could Not Finish
This is a dark, dark novel. The male protagonist is a hired assassin who seems to be remorseless about the “hundreds” of people he has killed. The author tries to excuse this by showing he had an absolutely horrible childhood, but a traumatic childhood doesn’t excuse sociopathic behaviour. This guy isn’t just killing criminals or soldiers in a war, he’s quite happy to murder someone perfectly innocent as long as the price is right. He even walks down the street imagining killing random people. This book was far too dark with its sociopathic protagonist. I read this genre of book for pleasant entertainment, not to read about horrible people. This is one of the few books I have ever begun that I couldn’t finish.

Christopher stole my heart! **Some Minor Spoilers Ahead**
5 stars.Such a good book. I tabbed this book so much and I normally don't tab historical romances that much but there were so many moments that I just wanted to return to and reread.Christopher Argent has been contracted to kill a very beloved actress. Millie. For some reason, he can't bring himself to kill her. It's really confusing him. When he can't kill her again he switches alliances. Now Argent will protect Millie and figure out who is trying to kill her and who has contracted it, for one night with her. They both agree to those terms.Christopher stole my heart. He saw that Dorian had my heart there for a little bit and he just snatched it from him.The opening chapter just hurt. I definitely teared up at a couple points. And the lengths that his mother went to, to make sure he had that little bit extra that she could get him squeezed my heart to the point of pain. There was so much about The Hunter that I loved. If I named it all this review would be a few pages but I am going to high light 2 things. One thing that I really enjoyed was what I've been calling the 'Scary Sexy moments' there were times when Argent has gone to kill Millie but they end up having a hot make out session or an embrace that could be seen as something dangerous and life threatening or incredibly erotic. Like the first time Christopher tried to kill Millie, Millie didn't know who he was, except this handsome man that she was extremely attracted to and he was taking her to a secluded corner to snap her neck. But she kissed him, needing and wanting desperately to kiss him. So we see that his fingers are at her neck and while they are caressing, we know that he just took her to that corner to snap her neck and it's this moment where it's both sexy and scary depending on whose POV you're getting. Also, I absolutely adored how Christopher was with Jakub. He was so sweet and caring which for a man who kills as easily as he breathes was fantastic to see. There were a few moments near the end where some people in attendance think he's going to chastise Jakub but he instead is very truthful but it was a very comforting kind of truth.Kerrigan Byrne is quickly reaching favorite author status for me. I've already moved her books up higher on my bookshelf (I organize most of my shelves by favs, the higher on the book shelf the more favored).I'm so excited to dive into the next book!

On the whole, like this book
I have read and enjoyed 'the Highwayman' but had a few reservations about the storytelling, rather than the story itself. In this second book 'the Hunter', the tone is much darker and there is almost nothing to lighten it. The hero, an assassin with an unspeakably degrading past, is portrayed very well by the author - he is lacking in humour, is almost childlike in his assessment of human emotions and actions, and has literally forgotten [or had beaten out of him] any humanity. When he accepts a contract on the heroine, everything in his life is turned on its head and suddenly he has feelings and the stirrings of emotions that he cannot understand. The unfolding of a dark, grim story is told well, and the heroine and her son are truly likeable characters. Meeting Dorian and Farah from the first book again is confirmation that men like these can find love and happiness - on their own terms, with some adjustments, as Dorian explains to Argent. My only quibble - and it is just being picky, I know - is the use of American words; we have 'story' for 'storey' and 'snit', not a word in common usage and certainly not appropriate to the time when this story is set. Also, there are certain small facts that irritate, such as the heroine, who is determined to keep her son safe at any cost because of her knowledge of what had happened earlier in his life, introducing the child at a party of theatre-goers/patrons by his real name; pretty stupid and not at all what one would expect of her character. There is also a very small exchange of words between a happily married couple in French - but the husband answers 'vous' to his wife, instead of 'tu' - small detail, but the author, publisher or proof-reader should be aware of mistakes like this.Despite minor irritations - which I dislike because they distract from the storytelling - I liked this book, and at the end, the last four paragraphs round off the story beautifully. I will read the next book in this series

Perfection
I literally have no words to describe how this book made me feel, except that it's historical romance perfection. The author made me ride the rollercoaster of emotions, culminating in the sheer beauty of the hero's redemption and realization of his deep and profound love for the heroine. Ms. Byrne delivers in the old school romance feels I love and remember.
