The Old Guard Book Two: Force Multiplied (OLD GUARD TP)

Purpose
A great story. I loved this one even more than the first volume. I really enjoyed the themes of sins of the past, atonement, betrayal and redemption. Two side each with a different purpose. The character development is great as well. I thought the artwork was good in the last issue, but I really prefer it in this one. It is still dark in the right mood of the story but more detailed.I really like that the Guard are trying to find their purpose, but where there is light there is darkness. This is a great action packed, dark tail that is definitely not for younger readers in both language and artwork. Especially after the last page I need to read the next volume. I am sure the guard will definitely not just fade away.

Great sequel!
I adored the first book in this series and ordered this one the second I finished it, and it’s just as good if not better! The characters are clever, the plot is interesting and I honestly just love this series of comic books a lot 🙈

Forced in multiple ways
Volume 2 just doesn't have the spark of the first and to be blunt, lost me at pretty much the first line."6700 years ago""(Give or take)"Sooo... in the middle of the stone age...with your domesticated horses...iron weapons, rivets and tools? And sure, that's me being a bit an@l but it just totally broke the immersion for me.Not sure if bad writing or bad art, but look at some history books before writing something that spans human history! But the story line is really what killed it for me, the main characters arc just makes no sense for her and it just left me cold. Not Rucka's best work, but it got a Nflix series, so what do I know? :p

So much character exploration - and of course a lot of action - spoilers below
I loved this collection so much and it definitely included what I felt was missing from the first collection; we get so much more depth to Andy and every glimpse we got into her backstory was so good and added such a depth to her characterisation. She's lived for over 6,000 years and you can't even imagine what she's seen and experienced. It's so easy to understand where she's coming from in this collection; for 6,000 years she's watched humanity fight, torture, and murder one another and she's just about had enough of trying to save them. I didn't get Nile in this one though; she's been alive for 27 years and thinks she knows better than Andy - she didn't even seem to have any compassion or understanding for how drained Andy was - I also didn't get how she just took charge and all the guys just left with her?! Like not one of them said anything to Andy as they wandered out - Andy who had cared for them for centuries and led them. The third instalment is definitely going to make for an interesting read.

More of the same
“The Old Guard – Force Multiplied” collects the five-issue series of that name, the second volume of this series, and apparently the story will conclude in the third volume. Let’s see what Netflix has to say about that…As I said in my review of the first volume –“Basically, this is a story about a group of unkillable killing machines, who speak modern American and have modern liberal values, much unlike the sort of people they were born as or anyone they would have met on their long journey. But, this is a comic book, so we don’t have to think about all that while we enjoy the ultra-violence and smart-talk.”And that is even truer now, now that Netflix has filmed the story. If you liked the first volume, then this is more of the same, this time with an “old” character returning from the dead with a different version of what they (the Old Guard) are there for, some character development, and definitely some plot development, particularly if the hints dropped by the new baddie means that there is another team working on the ‘other side’. I could be wrong about that.

Long lost love
A paperback that collects all five issues of the comic 'The Old Guard: Force Multiplied.'If you're reading this, you've either read the first volume of the comic 'The Old Guard: opening fire.' Or you've seen the film version of that on Netflix. If you're seen the latter but not read the former, you will be able to get into this book easily. Ditto if you read volume one.If not either, go and do one of the two. Or both. Otherwise you won't know what's going on.This, as with all such paperbacks, uses chapter pages and the cover art of individual issues so you can see where one issues ends and another begins. There is strong language, graphic violence and adult moments, so it's not for younger readers. After the end of volume one, Andy and the others are carrying on doing what they do. Booker is on his own. Nile is still getting used to things. But then someone not seen in a long time returns. Which has consequences... The film did bring in something a little earlier than this as a plot point, but it still works fine in the context of the comic. The art is the same as before. I like the artist's style very much, and it suits the graphic nature of the story well. But that is an opinion.I liked this more than the first volume. That felt like, at times, the storyboards for an action movie. Whereas the film did use it's visuals and length to really get to the ideas of the story, and what immortality would be like. This volume manages to do the same, and thus there's a little less action than before. So if you want character first and foremost with occasional action, it will be right up your street. Accent on the word if.Nicky and Joe are, as with book one, a little underused, but Nile does get some very good moments that really do good stuff with the character. Andy has a new hairstyle that looks great, so here's hoping for that in any film sequel if it happens. This does feel very much like the middle of a trilogy - and not just because it is - but it doesn't just set things up to finish it off, there is some good development in the storylines as they go along, leading to a good central moral issue that makes you think. As such things should. It all ends with things to be resolved, but it made me want to see how that will happen. Which is as it should be.There is a third and final lot of comics coming, and this does announce those at the end. I look forward to reading them.A very good entry in the series. Hope it gets a movie.
