Zefal "Cristophe" Mountain Bicycle Half Toe Clip

Good product with a great price. Keeps your foot in place and allows for some pull on the up-pedal. Won't trap you in an emergency foot drop, just know you size. Read the other reviews for a better reference. I'm a mens US 9.5 - 10 and the L/XL works great for me. As another review mentioned, they do add weight to the pedal front and will point downward. Just get into the habit of pulling your foot back a bit to lift the clip forward, then sliding your toe into it. It's easy enough once you do it a few times (kinda fun). Though they will still drag if you're walking you bike. It doesn't come with directions but you can probably figure out how to screw it on. It came with some sort of washer-plate for the screw heads inside the pedal. At' least that's what I think they are. They didn't fit the inside of my pedal initially but the two washer areas of each plate is connected by a thin strip of metal. I just bent this thin strip in a 'U' shape, keeping the washer areas flush for the pedal. This keeps the screw heads from direct contact with the pedal material. I don't really know but it works. Overall, cheap, efficient little addition for your bike. Just make sure your pedal has holes an inch or so apart to fit it (probably being used by the reflector).

I like these clips a lot. I live in oregon and commute in the rain year round. When its rainy, slipping off the pedals when charging up a hill or racing to make a light can be a real issue. These toe clips seem to have helped a lot with that. I like them over caged toe clips and clip-less pedals for basically the same reason. My job means that some days I'm in the lab, some days in the field, and some days presenting. Different situations call for different footwear and I'd rather not be locked into a special set of clip-less biking shoes and then have to carry extra shoes in my bag. Caged clips pose a similar problem in that I've found they tend to be rougher on my shoes so I'd have to pack my nice shoes and ride in a designated bike shoe to avoid scuffing them up. With these clips I don't have too much of an issue. They can still scuff up a shoe a bit, but not nearly to the extent of caged pedals. A quick word of caution: You should take a quick look at your pedals before buying. I thought these were so great on my bike that I picked up a pair for my girlfriend's bike without looking at her pedals. Apparently not all pedals are drilled and not all drilled pedals have a level mounting surface (her pedals had inset reflectors that left an uneven mounting surface and made sturdy installation impossible). If you don't have pedals made to accept a toe clip you'll need to pick up a pair of those as well if you want to go this route. Overall: 5 stars for the clip, its design, and construction. These half toe clips seem well made, and are entirely adequate for my needs. I don’t know if anyone is going to add power on the up-stroke with them – I wanted to prevent my foot from sliding forward off the pedals, as well as to have an aid for quicker and more consistent foot placement. Other reviewers have noted that the clips come nested, and that has caused one to be taller over the shoe than the other. True, see photo. I used simmering hot water; held the tighter clip in the water with forceps, to warm; wore leather work gloves to shape the clip further open. I used my other clip with a piece of masking tape (so I would not confuse them) for comparison. This took about 5 attempts, as you have to open it a little further than desired to allow for some closure as the piece cools. I was pleased to see that when attached, the bottom surface is about level with the pedal… as photos shown by other users showed a significant step up from the pedal, into the toe clip, which seemed very wrong. The hardware was acceptable, if you already have a tube of blue Lock-tite on hand. Something should be used to prevent the nuts from loosening. Other options would be split or star lock washers, or Nylock nuts. Do not over-tighten -- snug is good. I almost ordered BOTH sizes because the size guideline seemed suspect, and foot positioning on the pedals will vary by personal preference, shoe type, fit, etc. I wear size 9 ½ running shoes, and finally decided that the large would be TOO LARGE… there were too many people with size 12 or 14 shoes that really liked the fit; it didn’t make sense that my feet would fit just as well. PLUS, I figured if they were too short, I could fashion spacers to hold the toe clips further away from the pedals – whereas if they were too long, no mods would help. So my size 9 ½ shoes fit pretty well in the size S/M, with no mods needed. See the photos with two different shoes fully inserted. When I ride, my shoes end up 4 or 5 mm away from the toe clips, so I expect that some people with size 10 shoes would be fine with the S/M size.

These strapless clips actually work! They feel comfortable and I like them. I removed a star because the shims provided that sit between the clips and pedals. Well as you can see from my photo included, doesn't fit so the screws line up. The shims would not line up on my new pedals I bought and the pedals that came on the fat bike I bought! Hence 4 stars because the shims act as support to strengthen the nut and bolt tightness. Now my to clip only is anchored to the plastic of the pedal. And that won't last as long with the wear and tear of the rotating pedal. UPDATE: 4 months later and plenty of miles on 3 different bikes ( 3 sets ordered ). I really love these half toe clips compared to strap in toe clips. I only had one issue on one bike where the screws became loose on one of the toe clips. But thankfully my daughter saw the screw and I turned it in by hand just enough to get me home. Once I tightened it completely I was set and it works perfect. I will add the star back I took off. because even without the shim, the screw holds in nicely for a good while. Just have to check them once every couple of months maybe.

These clips are the gateway into clipless pedals! I'm writing this review after swapping them out for Shimano MTB pedals. These were exactly what I needed to get used to having my foot bound to the pedal but without the full commitment. I have an endurance road bike and knew that I'd be quickly moving on to MTB pedals, but I needed practice being aware of removing my foot from the pedal. These toe clips are excellent for that training and I used them for nearly 2 months before the switch. I plan on getting a commuter single speed or hybrid bike and my pedals with these toe clips will be installed on them. Even after abusing them on barely-paved NYC streets with my long crank arms (so the clips routinely scratched the pavement), these still look great! They're also very easy to clean and service. Mountain bike shoes, cleats, and pedals will cost around $200 combined, so these are incredibly cost effective as well! I would recommend these clips to anyone who finds the notion of being one with the bike a bit daunting and who wants the ease of being able to wear any shoe on their bike!

I had no experience with "toe clips" before these and I can say there was nothing scary about using them. They fit fine. I ordered the S/M size and I am a male who wears 8.5 to 9 size shoes. I am usually riding with Asics Gel Kinsea size 8.5. and the fit is good. I will say they are not the easiest to mount. I would expect most pedals are not going to be an open package bolt on situation. In my situation I had to actually completely disassemble my pedals and flip the pedal to the other sides shaft in order to mount these properly. Also there are no lock washers or lock nuts with these so unless you plan to stop and tighten them every mile I would suggest purchasing some from your local hardware. I am a handy diy type so I actually had some extra black bolts and nuts and washers so I was able to resize them and use what I had. After rebuilding and packing my pedal ball bearings of course.... So if you are not so handy I would look elsewhere or be prepared to buy different pedals with cages that these will work with easily.

They look great, but they came without any screws and nuts to mount them! They're not standard hardware store machine screws; they have a pseudo-washer molded into the screw head making them just slightly larger, especially important to not deform and pull through this plastic material. Any washer is too large. Unless you've got a set of bolts from a previous clip set, don't buy 'em ... big bummer!

I put these Zefal Christophe toe clips on my touring hybrid a year ago after being unable to get used to the Time system. They work very well with my Merell Moab Ventilator hiking shoes. We can divide pedaling into four quadrants: (1) the downstroke; (2) the "pull back" at the bottom of the rotation; (3) the upstroke; and (4) the "push forward" at the top . Clipless systems provide no advantage over these Christophe clips on both the downstroke and on the "push forward" at the top. You can push down and forward as powerfully as your muscles allow with these Christophe clips. Users of clipless systems will always swear that they develop lots of pull on the upstroke, but studies with stress gauge cranksets do not support that assertion. Only an elite minority of pro cyclists actually develop significant upward pull on the pedals over the course of an entire ride. The best case scenario for mere mortals is to completely unweight the rising pedal. Here, the Christophe clips provide enough centering that it is possible to completely unweight the rising foot on the upstroke without losing position for the push forward and downstroke. So, the Christophe clips definitely improve efficiency as compared to open platform pedals. The one area where they are at a severe disadvantage to clipless systems is during the "pull back" phase at the bottom of the rotation. Legs have powerful muscles available for the pull back, but very little pull back is possible with the Christophe clips. A little bit, but not very much. It is just enough to maintain your foot's position on the pedal, but not enough to help propel your bicycle forward. My one complaint is that only two sizes are offered. My Merells are size 11.5 and end up placed too far rearward. The L/XL size is really not so large. It would be better if the company offered a longer clip or if the packaging included optional spacers and longer bolts for men over size 10. Si tienes los pedales normales en una MTB del estilo de Xlc 2501812000 y no quieres usar pedales automaticos, es buena opción. Son fáciles de poner si los pedales son los normales que llevan los reflectores de 2 agujeros, permiten un pequeño ajuste hacia los lados, aprovechan esos dos agujeros aunque ya no se podrá poner el reflectante. Permiten mantener buena posición del pie en el pedal, se notan sobretodo en las subidas que es cuando al hacer fuerza se puede descolocar y no pedalear bien, también evitar un resbalón en el pedal y hacerse daño por ejemplo si la suela tiene barro o algo que resbale. Son flexibles, si dan en el suelo no se rompen a la primera. Permiten quitar el pie sin problema en cualquier momento para no caer al suelo. Hay que acostumbrarse a meter el pie, como al pedal se le ha añadido un peso en la parte delantera, suelen quedarse al revés, aunque se puede iniciar la marcha sin que rocen, en una bicicleta de 26" y terreno llano no rozan.
