This book comes with great illustrations and a good story. It is such a touching story that depicts the suffering the early railway workers went through to pursue a better life.

I bought it because people were trying to ban it. It was very informative about the transcontinental railroad being built and how the workers were treated plus it also had a great story about family. The illustrations were amazing!

This book is wonderful to show the harsh reality faced by those that worked on the railroad system in the 1800s. The title, though pejorative, proves to be worn as a badge of endurance of the hard work and discrimination faced by Shek and Wong and other immigrants of the time period. This is based on actual events and is well worth sharing from ages 9 and up. Beautiful artwork lies within the pages of this book as well as a great story.

Interesting story and beautifully illustrated. Great addition to children's picture book collection.

I used this with my 4th Grade students during our Westward Expansion/Transcontinental Railroad unit. They loved the story and were intrigued by the artwork. This is a great piece of historical fiction to include in any U.S. history class. My students even brought it up again as we discussed struggles of immigrants later.

Beautiful book and illustrations. Tells the story of the hard-working Chinese immigrants and how they were so instrumental in building the railroads for our country. Reverence of ancestors, love of family, sacrifices made. I enjoyed it as an adult and recommend it for kids.

This is a very well-done look at an aspect of life in America that we may not be familiar with. I found it very interesting and well-illustrated. I first found it in our public library and ordered a copy for my own bookshelves for my grandchildren to read.
