A New History of Modern Architecture

Well-organized, readable and objective, with strong visual component
I bought this text for Meredith Clausen’s course on 20th Century Architecture at the University of Washington. What a pleasure to read — content organization was efficient, Davies’s narrative was suitably objective, and writing style was substantive yet accessible throughout. Illustrations were equally strong, particularly the plans, sections and elevations throughout the book (all drawn in a consistent style). Highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a thorough, enjoyable introduction to modern architecture.

A great, painless way to understand modern architecture!
Not sure why more people aren't reviewing this book, given all of the confusion over modern architecture. If you're a fan of our modern cityscape but have no idea how to really make sense of it, this is really, really a good place to start. Thanks so much tothe other reviewers that got me interested in this. You don't have to have a degree in architecture to learn tons from this book; well written, logical and witty, even! Would definitely recommend it!

Comprehensive, well written and useful
I bought this book some time ago and I have referred to it on a number of occasions. My copy is the paperback and the cover makes it look a bit like one of those Government reports that thud on to your desk; but once you get inside, the whole thing is fascinating. To start with, it is lavishly illustrated, so that you do not have to rely on descriptions alone to visualise a building – even furniture is sometimes depicted. Even more important, perhaps, it is clearly and concisely written, with a minimum of architectural jargon. Buildings that I have visited in other countries, such as the Loos House in Vienna or the Tugendhat Villa in Brno, are succinctly described, in terms that make a useful back-up to one's memory. I happened to see the BBC-TV programme about the structural engineer Peter Rice, and sure enough, he is in here. The price of the book is very reasonable but, regardless of cost, it is a worthwhile investment for any cultured household. Tully Potter

Comprehensive, clear, a pleasure to read, insightful, all in one volume and well illustrated.
What makes this book so enjoyable and useful is that its possible to read absorb and understand the various movements in architecture across the globe, whilst having easy access within the same volume, to other approaches to make one's own cross references and comparisons. Its intelligent, perceptive, and confident approach is clearly based on direct experience of the architectural process, and its consequences. It is a very welcome addition in a time where scholarship and understanding in the profession is often absent. New architecture, city design and ideas play a key role when making new places. All of the related professions, from planners to politicians, will benefit from having this book. In a time of rapid change and gratuitous deployment of 'styles', often on a random basis, Colin Davis's scholarly approach makes clear the meaning and influences that determine architecture so that contemporary design approaches can be understood in their historic context. It should be everyones required reading. As a practice we frequently give A New History of Modern Architecture as an award, or as a gift of appreciation to our architects and students as they progress on to other offices and studies. A great book!

Great value for such a quality publication.
Beautifully illustrated and authoritive analysis. Broad ranging coverage providing an excellent overview of so many trends, developments and influences, albeit mostly western. To achieve this objective, naturally the degree of detail is somewhat limited but nevertheless never superficial. A quality publication not just in content but also layout and print. Delighted with this purchase.
