Great for a white noise machine
This is way better than the Marpac Dohm-DS Dual Speed Sound Conditioner I bought from Amazon and it is less than half the price! The Conair Sound Therapy has a volume control and you can turn it up really loud (great if you have loud neighbors). I have super loud neighbors and actually use 3 different white noise machines at night just so I can sleep (yes, I need to move) and this is the best one I have (and was the cheapest). I only use the white noise setting on here but there is so many settings to choose from. I plan to buy 2 or 3 more of these so I can have 2 in my bedroom and 1 or 2 for the rest of the house to use during the day so I don't have to hear my neighbors. Way cheaper than moving. Even if it would only work for say a year it wouldn't be so bad since it is less than 20 bucks. Granted, I hope it lasts for many years. If you use batteries it will drain them. Batteries is a nice option if the power goes out and it won't be back on for awhile - at least you will still be able to sleep. I leave mine on all night and turn off when I wake up but it has an option to stay on for I believe 60 minutes. If you need a white noise machine - buy this one. It is cheap, works and can be turned up very loud if needed. Also it has a big on/off button which makes it easy to use after the lights are off. Edit - 04/16/2017. I have bought a total of 3 of these and I still use one to sleep every single night. Yes, you can hear the loop which can drive a person crazy but I have noticed if I put it on the outdoorsy one (the one you can hear crickets) I can't seem to hear the loop like I can on the white noise one (which that one you can hear the loop and almost imagine a word being repeated (which varies with what your mind comes up with)). I still feel this is the best machine out of all the other brands, I have bought and you definitely get your money's worth. I did buy mine years ago (2 or 3?) so they could be made not as good now, not sure. Oh, and I'm still using the first one I bought, just bought multiples because of having rude ignorant loud neighbors.

Perfect baby machine, large power button, large volume dial, cheap price
I mainly use this sound machine in my baby's bedroom. I also own the Conair SU7 Sound Therapy and Relaxation Clock Radio and the Graco sweet slumber sound machine. This sound therapy machine is great because the ON/OFF button and the volume dial are large and obvious, and has a pretty good white noise. It has other nature sounds, but I prefer the white noise. It is the greatest basic sound machine that I have seen so far. It is more convenient to use compared to the Conair Sound and Clock radio because I can easily the large power button in the center and the large side volume dial, while holding a wiggly baby. The Conair Sound Therapy and Relaxation Clock Radio (a little more expensive) is used in my other child's room. I bought it because I check the clock while I'm putting her to bed. That Conair clock radio is different from this regular Conair Sound Therapy machine because of these features: clock, radio, and multiple alarm presets. The Conair clock radio has more options, but its really difficult to find the ON/OFF button and the volume dial, both of which are small and difficult to find. The buttons on the top of the clock radio look like a distorted computer keyboard with nearly all the buttons being the same size and the volume dial being small and hidden off to the side. I already stuck labels reminding me where both of these items are located, but the top of the clock radio visually frustrates me. The Graco sweet slumber sound machine is the most expensive at around $40, but has great features: soothing classical music melodies, many nature sounds, mp3 player hookup, optional use of automatic timer shut-off, the best white noise sound I've heard thus far. I use this machine for traveling (because unplugging any machine is a hassle due to child safety electrical outlet strip covers). One downside includes the power adapter's ease of unplugging itself. A slight tug (like from a toddler) will unplug the power adapter from the machine... very annoying. This is the best sound machine ever because it has everything you can possibly need for your child/infant to find a favorite song/melody that they prefer to fall asleep to. If you know your child sleeps to the white noise sound , then get this sound therapy machine. The other sounds can get too repetitive.

Works for very light sleepers *UPDATE* -> stopped working after a few years, but still worth it
I love this! I have 2 of them - one for the baby's room and one for the toddler's room. I have two very light sleepers (lucky me ;), and it blocks out the sounds of the baby screaming in the room attached to my toddler's room - so I would say it works really well! I love the river; sound for my kid's rooms - it's a gentle sound but loud enough to block out almost all noises. I don't notice the looping that other people talk about, but it's not in my room. The looping doesn't bother my kids' sleep. I would buy this 100 times over for the value of the sleep that it has given us. 4.5 YEAR UPDATE: We've purchased a total of 3 of these. We lost one or something - I honestly don't remember anymore. Of the other 2, 1 is no longer well-connected (it shuts off easily for no obvious reason other than a finicky positioning?). The last one broke completely this past week. It was either the 4-year-old device or the 2-year-old device. I took it apart completely to check the computer board: I think it's the tiny battery (or whatever it is) that is connected and glued onto the board. No idea how to fix that, so we'll need to buy another one. All of that being said, I still believe this sound machine was worth the price. I was very hard on these machines as we've taken it with us anytime we travel away from home, several times per year. It has been tossed into a suitcase and taken on many airplane rides and road trips. If I do end up buying another sound machine, it will likely be this one.

Nice unit, great value.
My wife and I wanted to upgrade from a sleep sheep/dolphin sort of situation so that we didn't have to keep "hitting the dolhpin" every 45 minutes as our daughter napped/slept. This unit fits the bill. Plugged in, it works fine, and the functionality can continue portably with batteries (4 AA, not included). To me, it is a little bigger than it looks from the pics, but that means this can get pretty loud (WAY louder than a sleep sheep). The speaker projects the sound nicely in all directions. The sounds are good, but loop time is fairly short (10-15 seconds on some, as far as my ear can tell). I found the easiest solution to that is to simply use a continuous or naturally looping sound such as the pure white noise or the heartbeat (if you are into that kind of sound). We like the auto-timer (optional). That and the dual power solutions (AC and battery) were the main selling points. And for 16-17 bucks? Can't beat that. I always like having to throw in a DVD in order to get the free $25 shipping. *smile* So why only four stars? As with many of my reviews, I'd go 4.5 if I could, but I can't. I also can't go the full five because the volume knob on this thing is sort of silly. For one thing, it turns and turns and turns even after the volume is very loud and more turning only adds distortion. It also turns VERY easily. As in, you can brush it with your arm as you reach for your alarm clock and substantially change the volume. The low end of the volume appears to be pretty steep in terms of increase/decrease, while the higher end, like I said, just keeps on turning and adding distortion instead of volume. I don't mean to say the volume never stops (it does), it would just work better if it were a smaller, labeled dial with better proportion to the up/down, stopping when the volume starts to generate a distorted mess of the noises. Come on, Conair -- we know how to turn a volume knob without it needing to be comically large and all-too-easy to accidentally adjust. My wife says she can tape the knob so it won't turn once we find a nice setting, but that is exactly the sort of kludgey workaround that should result in four stars instead of five (even at this great price point).

Awesome for Kids and Adults Alike
I bought one of these for my toddler- he is going on 3 years old- because he had become an incredibly light sleeper. As many parents will agree, when you have a kid who used to sleep through the night start to wake up 3 or 4 or 5+ times a night for ridiculous reasons, you'll do just about anything to get back to that happy, uninterrupted sleeping place. On a whim I thought this might help solve the problem. I was right! We started it out pretty quiet about 2 feet from my son's crib, and gradually increased the volume until it was up pretty loud. Because we live in a small house, my son's room shares a wall with our bedroom and with the only bathroom on the main floor. You can imagine, that leads to all sorts of problems. Now that his sound machine is up pretty loud though, he no longer wakes up when the toilet flushes, we go to bed, watch TV, etc. An added bonus is now that we have a new baby, older brother doesn't get woken up by his crying in the middle of the night either! I liked this machine so much that I bought a second for our master bedroom, and it now sits between the new baby and the bed, making it easier for us to go to bed, get dressed in the morning, or baby to take a nap during the day while big brother watches TV or is just generally crazy. I find that it also helps me to block out husband's snores, and sleep better myself. For anyone interested, I leave both machines on the Rainfall sound because it seemed most consistent without being too high pitched. That said, I do like many of the other settings, but for now I'm leaving mine on Rainfall so my little one will be used to the sound when he moves into big brother's room in a few months. Honestly, for the price, I've not been able to find anything even comparably as awesome. Definitely a good investment!

UPDATE: HORRIBLE!
I gave a review as you see below, but it was enthusiasm over finding the same machine I'd used for several years before we all were using Amazon. CLEARLY, Conair has dropped in QUALITY esp for price! The volume was SO low, I put batteries in the old one and for the last 2yrs have used BOTH. Then, 2 nights ago, the NEW one WITH batteries AND plugged in has quit working entirely. Wasted batteries even. The only reason it didn't wake me was because the old one was still working. The old one had begun to cut off on me during the night so, I bought a new one. No need. The old great, LOUD one I need is still running on batteries at more than 5yrs old. Please don't throw your money away. I can't believe what I spent on it when I look back esp w all that's available today. First, I LOVE this sound machine! BUT, my zero "stars" are based on THIS one only as it's defective, while the high stars on sleep quality and the item over all are based on those I have/had, not THIS one. I've owned this Conair sleep machine (with replacements as needed from use)for over 20yrs. I LOVE the machine all around, but NOT who I purchased it from the last 3 times, AMAZON! Before Amazon, I purchased them at Bed Bath and Beyond and Walmart. This is my 3rd from Amazon in just the last 5 yrs. I've had to return every one for poor sound compared to the previous one(I still have the last one so, I could easily tell the difference today). I bought a new one yesterday because my 17mo old grandson played with it over the wknd & it wasn't working properly afterwards. Although, as with the last time I purchased a new one(2016) after another grandson played with it, I noticed a few days later it seemed to recoup. While going through the return process today, I noticed I'd bought 3 in just the last 5yrs from Amazon AND paid 42% more yesterday than I did in 2016! That's STAGGERING and RIDICULOUS!! Again, I didn't realize that at the time of purchase. I cannot find another sound machine with 10 different sounds, very high(which I need to sleep) and low volume, timer shut off or continuous and batteries for backup, which is a MUST for me as I bolt straight up from sleep if it cuts off, at such a low price. After maybe 20yrs or so, I've found none as good all around; even much more expensive ones lacked one or more of the things I listed. I stand by the product 100%. I do NOT stand by Amazon or it's customer service AT ALL! I do highly recommend the Conair sound machine, but it's hit or miss with Amazon. And as I said, after a couple of days and after the new one was on it's way, the one I purchased in 2016 (after having to 1st send it back for a replacement when the new one arrived defective)managed to go back to normal. So, I'm returning the defective one that arrived today from Amazon for a refund as I am NOT getting another quite possibly defective one AGAIN sent to me in it's place.

Easy call! Point goes to HoMedics
This review is a comparison of the Conair Sound Therapy machine and HoMedics Sound Spa machine. I purchased and tested both this year, and the Conair machine is now in the Goodwill box while the HoMedics machine is on my bed stand. Here's why: 1. Both units are portable and run on both batteries or the included plug-in adapter. But the HoMedics machine is significantly smaller and lighter -- maybe 60% the size of the Conair machine, and takes up less room on your bed stand. Point for portability goes to HoMedics. 2. Both units have small, average speakers, but the HoMedics unit has a bit more base and is somewhat less hollow than the Conair machine. Sound quality point goes to HoMedics. 3. The on/off switch for the HoMedics unit is incorporated into the volume dial, meaning that you'll be setting the volume every time you turn the machine, so not ideal if you're very sound sensitive. The Conair unit uses a handy push button for on/off and a large, albeit somewhat clunky dial for volume. While the actual volume level is easier to adjust on the HoMedics know than on the Conair dial, not having to reset the volume ever time you power on the unit wins a point for Conair. 4. Both units have a variety of sounds, a total of 10 for the Conair unit and six with the HoMedics unit. But quantity doesn't trump quality in this case, as the Conair sounds are not only of lesser audio quality, they also have noticeable looping. Point goes to HoMedics on this core utility of these machines. 5. Both units have a timer function, with an on/off auto timer switch on the Conair unit set to 60 minutes and the HoMedics unit offering a timber push button that can be set to 15, 30 or 60 minutes. Timber point goes to HoMedics. 6. These are both low-cost machines, but the HoMedics machine saves you around five bucks. Easy call! Point goes to HoMedics. So, there you have it -- the HoMedics Sound Spa is my 5 pints to 1 winner over the Conair machine after my test drive over the past couple of months. Hope this helps you pick the right machine for you!

performs its intended function very well
UPDATE: Two years after purchase, this sound machine has finally been retired due to a recently-developed unreliability in the wiring somewhere, causing it to suddenly stop working and need to be repositioned and restarted. I've ordered another of the same thing. It's a pretty good little workhorse, used every night for my kids as well as during naps, and it's traveled across the country with us through a bunch of hotels, and only now has it started having a problem. Looking at its price and reviews, I didn't expect this to be an incredible one-speaker wonder of unbelievable sound experience. And it isn't. It's a very serviceable little thingie for generating droning background noise to help someone sleep or to screen out surrounding sounds. It doesn't create a sensuous sound environment for ecstatic lovemaking. It smooths over that annoying clock ticking in the next room at night in an old and creaky house. I use it for that, and for my baby's naptime. Listening to this device, you won't be able to close your eyes and believe you're actually at the beach, experiencing a thunderstorm, or stuck in the chest cavity of a giant beast, but I'm quite satisfied, and my 8-month-old doesn't appear to be a very nitpicky audiophile. + very easily packable and portable + the 60-minute timer can be turned OFF! + volume dial is huge and on/off button is very easy to hit when you're drooling on your pillow + good range of volume for faint background noise all the way up to drowning out alley cats - not exactly theater-quality sound, but come on, it's a little bitty built-in mono designed to put out static - when it's on, a bright red pinpoint light lights up above the on/off button and might be annoying to some really sensitive people who need absolute pitch blackness to sleep, but it's really easy to stick a spot of electrical tape on it - not made of gold to be re-sold on ebay for thousands of dollars

Not very good.
I'm sorry, I don't like leaving bad reviews, but this machine is absolutely awful. The sounds are annoying and repetitive and muffled. The ocean wave sound which is my favourite sound to fall asleep to sounds like someone flushing a toilet in the distance over and over again. The bird sound has a cuckoo over and over and over again. I used it twice and put it back in the box. I can't even return it because it came from America which I didn't realise when I ordered it. I downloaded some nature sounds from itunes onto an old ipod and sat it on a speaker and I use that every night now. It's wonderful.

The Best Sound Machine- Super Loud
This is a must have for every insomniac. Of all the different brands and options- I've purchased most of them ranging, from $15 to $90, this is the best. The volume is great and the sounds are consistent, I've owned the older model of this brand for 10+ years and have had no problems with it. The battery option only works when it is unplugged- It does not kick on when a power outage occurs, you will need to detach the power cord for the battery to provide the power. This is unfortunate and a bit of a pain- and my only complaint. ( I only purchased this again because the original was left at a sleep-over and it was delayed in returning home, My son couldn't sleep when it was unavailable so a "Emergency Back-up" was necessary.) I looked in every store possible and could not find this model-So when I found it on Amazon.ca- I purchased 2. This is the perfect fit for our home- LOUD, Consistent, and a decent price. Don't waste your money on the other options, you'll be happy with this one. The downside of noisemakers- you will not be able to sleep without one-it is addicting.

Awesome!
Love this sound machine! Bought a second so both our kids could have one for naps/night to drown out surrounding noise. Love that it has the ability to time out, or stay on continuously. Best baby noise machine we have found! Love that it can plug in, or have a battery backup. Makes it easy to take on trips, camping or when the power goes out.

Works to help me get to sleep
I have an older version of this sound machine and have been using it to help me get to sleep and block out background noise for years. Some of the sounds are a little annoying but there are plenty to choose from so it was easy to find one that worked for me. This new sound machine has exactly the same sounds as my older Conair sound machine so I was really pleased.

it is fantastic. I use it while my toddler sleeps
For the price, it is fantastic. I use it while my toddler sleeps. It runs all night without turning off, the volume adjustment is good, and I like the range of sounds it provides. It arrived very quickly, too. My only complaint would be that at a higher volume and with certain sounds (white noise in particular), there is some feedback (I'm a very sensitive sleeper, so I unfortunately hear everything). Otherwise, it would be a 5 start rating. I would definitely recommend it though. I never understood why anyone would pay more!
