Good as it gets
I bought this double DVD + live CD after first getting the highly rated `Silent Force' Tour DVD. After being `wowed' by the Java Island performance on the Silent Force I hoped this earlier performance wasn't going to disappoint. It didn't, although I was going to knock off half a star of my rating for the fact that it isn't a full live concert, but a compilation of 3. One of the joys of watching the Java Island performance is the way the atmosphere develops as the night draws in. Watch the `whole concert' on the Mother Earth Tour DVD and you skip about from Rock Werchter, Pukkelpop and Lowlands seemingly in no particular order. So in that respect it doesn't do exactly what it says on the tin, although the performances are no less spellbinding. As someone whose introduction to WT was via `The Heart of Everything' and then `The Silent Force' (i.e. backwards from their more recent material) `Mother Earth' initially comes as a bit of a shock. The performances are earthier, there are more guitar riffs and several numbers include the goth `growling' that WT dropped completely on the `Silent Force' CD (apart from the bonus track `Jane Doe' on the later UK version). It's a less `refined' WT in many respects and I can see why the diehard continental fans mourn the passing of the earlier phase. The Mother Earth concerts provide material with a wide range of tempos from the melodic `Never Ending Story' to the heavy goth `Deep Within'. Personally I like all their material, the band have just evolved into their current and very distinctive style. Comparisons can certainly be made with Evanescence and Nightwish, but all three are distinctive in their own right. The live DVD concerts include outstanding performances of:(Introduction leading into) `Deceiver of Fools', `Caged' (slightly reminiscent of Kate Bush's `Wuthering Heights'), `Mother Earth', `Enter' (a heavy but melodic piece with guitar riff complementing Robert Westerholt's growling, before Sharon del Adel takes the main vocal part), `Our Farewell' (a remarkable duet with former Nightwish soprano Tarja Turunen), `The Dance' (slow tempo goth rock with growling by Robert Westerholt), `The Promise' (complete with two minute instrumental introduction and numerous tempo changes), `Dark Wings', `Restless' (ballad), `Deep Within' (Sharon den Adel handing over to the former Orphanage `vocalist' George Oosthoek for an epic growling session), `Never Ending Story' (ballad), `Ice Queen' (a grand finale with catchy sing-a-long `who-ooh' chorus).I've yet to investigate the second DVD, but just when I thought it couldn't get any better I discovered the free live CD containing the concert material. For my money there isn't a bad track on the DVD so it's hard to pick a favourite, but if pressed today I'd probably go for `Enter'.The biggest surprise (apart from why no-one has yet reviewed this DVD) is that WT still appear relatively unknown in the UK despite their popularity in the Netherlands and continental Europe. If you like female-fronted `symphonic goth rock' this DVD is quite simply a must-have.
