Good for product, not people
I bought this as something to possibly substitute for a flash and thought the ring would have a cool effect. It comes with almost every size lens adaptor, so it fit just fine, but when I did some test shots with a friend, the LED lights were so bright, that it hurt their eyes. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a dimmer, which it badly needs. I used it on product shots and it did an okay job. The other issue is the LED technology isn't that great. these LED's don't throw off enough light to light something anymore than a foot or two away, then the light dwindles tremendously. If you're shooting product, its decent, but there are better lights on the market for a bit more. Don't waste your money on this one

Pleasantly surprised!
I was skeptical about this product at first! The reviews had stated some concern about its' build and the light output/battery life. The product is all plastic (minus the adapter ring), but it's still a sturdy build. (No complaints since a different material would have been a bit more cumbersome to carry around.) The light output? Let me tell you, I expected it to be less than spectacular, but the light rings burned into my retina would beg to differ! This is a pretty strong little light! I'm concerned that for some of my larger apertures (1.8/2.8) this thing may be too bright! I didn't notice much of a difference in light output between the AC mode and Battery mode. I used Enelope rechargeables. They lasted about 1.5 hours strong! (It didn't go completely dead til about 2.5 hours.)I would like to point out that my light flickers when the connection cable is being moved around. No flickering when it's set up on the camera. Outside of that minor annoyance, I'm very pleased with this purchase!

well, it lights up
I would reccomend buying a sb-700 and adapting a DIY wring around it. This lamp is always on when you're shooting, and produces a rather cold white light. The fact that you can swich between R/L/C is pretty useless given the close nature of macro work. I did not find using a battery pack useful, but did well on AC. It's a cheap product and it feels that way. I can say this though, it produces very soft lines, and with good backlighting this product works well.Again, it's okay, but you can definitely do better.

Surprisingly nice...especially for the price!
I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered this macro lens light. Frankly, the price was so far below "professional" solutions that I was prepared to be disappointed with a cheap flimsy product that didn't work well or fell apart after a week. Boy was I pleasantly surprised! This is a very nice kit for the money. Sure, the housings are low-grade plastic, but the lens adapters that screw into the filter threads are nicely machined from metal and overall it feels sturdy enough.More importantly, the light is very strong. Shooting macros in a dark room (to avoid white balance issues from other light sources), I could set a rather large DOF and still shoot at 125/sec. Shadows were soft and the lighting was even. Take care when using it to photograph highly reflective surfaces (or something behind glass), because the individual LED lights are visible in the reflection. The unit that attaches to the camera hot shoe holds two AA batteries. They seems to power the unit a long time, but if you need all-day performance, it also comes with a wall power adapter. Both pieces are fairly light (due to the plastic construction), so it doesn't add much weight (though most will be using a tripod for macro work anyway). The light is bright enough that I even tried using it for non-macro portrait shots as an auxiliary light source. It worked surprisingly well. It provided a soft fill-flash effect without the harsh shadows, barrel shadow or red eye of a pop-up flash. Plus, no one was blinking from a sudden bright flash in their face. I'm looking for other times when this kind of soft diffused light in front of the camera could be helpful. For the price, you can't beat it. I think this is the perfect accessory for someone who wants to experiment with macro photography yet doesn't want to spend an arm and a leg to get the specialized equipment. The kit probably isn't going to satisfy the professional macro photographer who makes a living selling their work, but then again I doubt that person is reading this review or considering this product in the first place. For the rest of us, it's a great bargain.

cheaap quality -usefullness qustionable
The quality is breakable cheap plastic - not something I'd likely take to the field. The fitting rings are too small for larger glass )faster lenses) and they don't even make the ring sizes I need. The purpose of this light is for macro lighting. Usually for macro work, you will be using fast glass - so it's strange they didn't make larger fitting rings.

Awesome Item!!!!
The reason it only got a 4 start was it should of came with a adapter for Sony/Minolta/Konica Cameras...due to the hot shoe...but product works as it should......for photographer enthusiast or people who love to take portrait shots this item is a must have. Having a Macro Ring Flash does not create shadows in the background of individuals like headshots or family portraits or even product presentation. Its like but does not replace studio umbrellas or lightbox...this is just a portable light source to capture your perfect picture the moment you need it the most.

Kinda Pointless
The light is good if you are shooting something really close, but dont think its going to work for portrait photography or anything pro because its flimsy and weak. Its also a huge pain to get it to fit on any nikon lens

Basic Light
if you own a wide angle lens yo wont be able to use it at the lowest mm setting, its def bright but no way to control the intensity-minor set back at times- but otherwise worth the $30+
