Dem-Bart Checkering Tool
Great beginner set. Layout is easy and the tools are quality made in Washington state by an American for Americans.

A great starter set
This set is great for a person just starting to learn about checkering and the included booklet provides great tips for getting started- they don't include a v groove chisel for cleanup of ends/details though- hence the 4 stars.

Unfinished wood handles but includes instructions
I figured for the price of this starter kit that the handles would at least be finished. But instead you get a real cheaply made checkering starter set, but surprisingly enough it included instructions. If your looking for a starter set or something that your going to use on a regular basis then I wouldn't purchase this item. This set shouldn't cost more than $15 based upon its overall quality.

I'll buy Dem-Bart again.
Works great, the pins are just nails. But if you file a taper to them they hold the head tight and don't let go. The nail idea is pretty slick, lose one and the replacements are at any hardware or craft store! The unfinished woods provides a comfortable grip, some sort of linseed oil or something might be nice but they don't need a finish.

Don't mess with ratty checkering!
I purchased the checkering tool handle and the F-1 head, hoping to restore some well-worn checkering on a 1970's S&W. There was enough of each channel left, I thought, to be able to follow it with this tool. Absolutely not: even the fine tool is aggressive enough to pay no mind to the existing checkering and instead simply wander with the wood. My conclusion: if the checkering is bad enough that you want to fix it, it's bad enough to go to the bidding side and buy a pair of grips.Larry Potterfield makes checkering look easy in his Midway video. So if you're bent on keeping the original grips, send them to Larry or another professional. Don't try it at home. Now I'm off to look fir a pair of K-frame Magna stocks . . .

Not Complete Set to begin with
Though it contains tools you will need. You still need to get veining cutters to complete the set. Both 60 and 90 degree veiners.
