The Focused Puppy

This book is packed with info and specific exercises to work on with your pup. Having done a bunch of them, I'd say they REALLY WORK! My little guy and I actually have fun working on this stuff, because the book explains things well enough that my dog and I both learn fast. Can't recommend it enough. Also fun that it's got color pictures and such - makes it more exciting to read.

Awesome book! Literally, the only puppy book you will need to buy - just throw away the others. It covers everything from before you get your puppy, to selecting the right pup, and then takes you through the first year - all with positive gentle methods of preventing the bad, promoting the good.

I think this book has a ton of valuable information and I love the way it is set up ... easy to follow. I particularly like the section on temperament testing puppies for the purpose of selecting a performance dog....I will definitely be applying this test in the future.

This book starts with the moment you get your puppy and takes you step by step through training. Detailed. Reasons are explained. Gentle training. Emphasis on choice, positivity, and success.

Great book, very informative and helpful for not only the new puppy raiser but also experienced ones. Lots of games suggested and the reasons why. A great gift for any new puppy owner!

I bought this book at the advice of my breeder. Has great training tips that were very helpful in training our new puppy. It’s also a great book if you plan to train your dog for performing.

This book shares the knowledge the authors built over time and experience. It's all about giving your performance dog a good foundation. To fully profit from the book, It helps to have a background in clicker training; wouldn't say the book is lacking but it doesn't go into the theory very much (it's not what this book is supposed to do), so if you're just starting your puppy in clicker training you might pair it with some other book on the basis of clicker training. That said, this book does what it promises: tell you how to raise your dog with a solid basis for performance work (or any other formal training activity, like S.A.R., service dog training...) and it does that very well. It's divided in sections like "first day" "first week" "first months" and tells you what exercices and games to teach, when, how often to repeat them... It's a puppy walkthrough!I loved this book, one thing I'd like to point out though, (but this is just my opinion), is book is for performance pet owners. Although much of the info would benefit any dog lover, I believe "regular" dogs need more freedom, and to be less dependent on owner.

An excellent book to help with puppy raising, and overall one of the best books concerning dogs as a whole!!

This is the perfect book for all dog owners, not just puppies. Teaches focus and will give you and operant dog (one who want to work for you). excellent if you want to start agility or any other dog sport.

I have been researching into what it takes to train your own assistance dog. For anyone wanting to do more than basic obedience training, this is a good book to use.
