Six CD box. This truly deluxe set celebrates the 30th Anniversary of Protocol, the powerhouse jazz-rock vehicle for the music of legendary drummer Simon Phillips (Jeff Beck, Toto, The Who, Hiromi). Included are all of the previous Protocol releases (I, II, III & IV), re-mastered for an even better sonic experience. Plus two full CDs of previously unreleased demos, with the embryonic tunes that would later become finished material for the Protocol II, III & IV albums. Phillips himself composed the liner notes of a glorious 24-page booklet with historic photos, providing deep insight into the genesis of the band, the tunes and recording processes. An absolute must-have collector's item for Simon's devotees worldwide! FEATURING: Greg Howe & Andy Timmons (guitar), Ray Russell & DC Cornelius (guitar), Dennis Hamm & Steve Weingart (keyboards), Ernest Tibbs (electric bass).

Buy It!
An amazing deal! Great music from great musicians. I already owned each CD - having the box set is awesome; remastered tracks, informational booklet, and the demo discs- how can you pass this up?Play along to the demos- if you’re a guitarist, keyboardist, instrumentalist, vocalist- there are tracks you can play with which have the best backing musicians in the world playing behind you. While being a great collection of music to listen to, this can also be a great educational tool! Enjoy!

Yes, Five Stars ... BUT
Okay so by now you've probably waded through all the superlatives in the other reviews. This stuff does have its weakness in that it presents landscapes rather than actual STATEMENTS but the playing is truly masterful. There is a lyrical melodic sensibility at work that seems much more mature than anything I ever heard from Toto. These tracks seem more like directions on a compass rather than the destinations themselves but they're exhilarating and engaging. On the basis of the title track I immediately invested in "Protocol II" and "Protocol III" ... and am certain I won't be disappointed.

Awesome Jazz Fusion.
Wow. What a sound.I took a chance on this set and was greatly rewarded. I have know Simon from his percussion work with many artists but I had never considered that he might be a great composer and band leader. If you like Jazz Rock get this.

Remastered collection of Protocol's four releases celebrating their 30th!
I first encountered Simon Phillips are the drummer for Toto's world tour (I think it was their 30th anniversary tour) and was impressed with his drumming skills. I ran into Phillips again at some music trade show events, where he was both an endorser and a feature player, and it was obvious Phillips can tackle practically any type of music and show off his skills. Phillips started a band, Protocol, 30 years ago, with three bandmates, and this is their 30th anniversary rerelease. There are six CDs in the box, all in cardboard covers and with a small booklet. Four of the CDs are remasters of the four released CDs, and the other two contain demos and other tracks for the last three commercial releases. The remastering is effective, and noticeable when compared to the old LP and CD in my collection. The two bonus disks are interesting, and show some of the skills Simon puts forward, as well as some tracks that didn't make it to the CDs, which are fun to listen. The main four CDs and Protocol's music are best categorized as jazz fusion, although there's enough cross-over to pop and pure jazz. It was pleasant listening to these tracks again. I have two of the works in my collection, but I don't think I've listened to them in years, so this was in some ways a trip down memory lane. The music stands up over the years, and while there's no "pop" hit here, fans of jazz fusion or Simon Phillips will enjoy this remastered box set.

Wonderful music, get it while you can!
Super set and must have for those who like me have only one or two albums on disc and the rest as mp3. The bonus discs and booklet are great if you’re any kind of fan, though the box itself and inner sleeves are a bit cheap and nasty, unfortunately a modern trend I really dislike. I’d have happily paid a few pounds more on deluxe packaging for such a special collection.

Simon Philips Protocol
Beautiful priced boxset if you compare it with the prices (what a shame) in the Netherlands. One critical remark: artwork could be better.
