Great read!
My favorite Robert Cormier novel, so far. Cormier is controversial because he deals with teenagers in really dark disturbing situations. The story is about a boy who discovers he has the power to turn invisible. What, he at first thinks is a gift, turns out be a curse. I don't want to say anything more about the novel other than I loved it! It was so good in a really dark messed up way! I recommend it for those who like this stuff, whether teenager or adult.

Kind of odd
I read this book a long time ago when I was in middle school. It was actually recommended to me by my English teacher who told me it's a "favorite among young men." You can image how weirded-out I was, thinking back on her telling me that, as I read through all of the really strange/perverted sexual situations in the book. We're talking... statutory rape and incest.THAT aside though, haha, this is a pretty good book. It's about a boy who can become invisible through some natural ability and he puts himself in a lot of situations that a young boy probably would, realistically, put himself in. A lot of us would like to think "Oh man, I'd be some kind of awesome super hero if I had that ability!" but this book kind of brings to light that most young boys would probably have a hard time not giving in to the more basic urges when presented with that type of power. The weirdness of this book made it stick out in my memory for years now and I finally decided to buy it and read it again.

Fade
Paul, a writer, can become invisible at will. He soon ascertains that his unusual "gift" must be used with respect and restraint. He discovers this when he sees and experiences clandestine incidents of the people around him. One should never be exposed to the hideous, hidden, profane weakness of humanity. The character development in this book is extraordinary. We actually feel Paul's pain and overburdened sense of responsibility as we follow him through his life. This book deals with an outrageous concept in a very realistic and compassionate way, making the story come to life. Mr. Cormier's story is one that will not fade in my mind for some time!

A bit strange but interesting....
This mans books are strange and a little bit scary. Makes you think about human nature and wonder if you would be tempted to use any unusual gifts you might have for good or self satisfaction. Not really for young impressionable teens, at least I don't think so. Very well written and quite suspenseful.

Enjoyable...but has some disconcerting subject matter.
I read this book when it first came out, and purchased it as an e book to re read. It can be a bit "disturbing" and some of the subject matter is , well...disconcerting. but all in all it was entertaining and well written.

This young adult novel poses adult questions.
I've always wondered what it would be like to be the fly on the wall--privy to all the secrets. This young adult novel asks that question and one even more profound. Would or could you resist the temptations to take and do whatever you wanted if no one else could see your actions? Would you use your powers for good or evil?

Held up on the second reading too!
LOVED this book. I read this book years ago when I was home sick in bed with the flu. I finished it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. Order and reread it again - and it held up on the second reading as well.

A novel of many parts and ideas
Starts out intriguingly, being the coming of age story of a boy who, as puberty strikes, suddenly has spells of becoming invisible (first without realising), as well as the story of a mystery, and a period piece about the Great Depression in an industrial town (and trade unions)...Then the novel becomes all postmodern, and it becomes a novel about writers, writing, creative writing classes and students, agents, and the process. Then it's back into the story of fading...It's a fast read, possibly for young adults. It's never boring. For me, the mixture did not really satisfy entirely, but it's a decent postmodern self-conscious scifi romp...
