Shake It Up, Baby!

Fun and unusual book doubles as a rattle, but text is so-so
We have almost every Karen Katz book - for some reason my daughter loves her books above all others. The illustrations of giant-headed babies make her laugh. She loves to shake this book - it has a built-in rattle in the spine of the book. Clear plastic with several colored beads inside. The pages are thicker and sturdier than some of her other board books. The pages have rounded corners. The words are fine... here's an example... "Shake your body, bounce and giggle! Shake your rattle, spin and wiggle."We haven't really figured out how to smoothly follow the activities in this book - it's a little awkward to read and shake the book at the same time, or read and pause to shake the book. My daughter usually just ends up losing interest, closing the book midway through and playing with the rattle spine again. All in all, she seems to like it more for the noise it makes as a rattle rather than a good read like Where is Baby's Mommy, or Princess Baby. Or any of the other Karen Katz books for that matter. I don't love this book, but she does, and I guess that's good enough for me.

My 9-month-old is addicted to this book
I checked this book out from the library for my 9-month-old daughter and now I'm buying it because she can't get enough of it. I have to read it to her 5-10 times a day (she'll cry if I stop reading it to her!)The book has a rattle built into its spine (with colorful beads visible through clear plastic), very thick sturdy pages, and Karn Katz's fun baby illustrations. My daughter seems to love Katz's illustrations and seems more engaged with Katz's books than any other books. She's always touching the babies in the illustrations.Other reviewers have said it's hard to use the book as a rattle to play along with the activities in the book (e.g., "whish and swirl up and down, shake that rattle all around.") But I always use the book as a rattle. I just read the page first, then shake the book each time it says "shake that rattle". My daughter anticipates each of the activities on each page ("touch your nose", "bang your drum", etc.) and gets so excited. This is a wonderful interactive book for babies and really gets my daughter excited about reading even at her young age.

Baby has so much fun with this!
My 12 month old daughter has had this book for a couple of months and she always giggles through it and tries to do all of the motions. We get out our music toys while we read the book, and it’s a good time. The rattle inside the book is the kind of attention grabber that helps bring babies to books and get them hooked on reading! It’s a great idea.

Love that Book!
I love the Shake It Up Baby! book by Karen Katz! I read it to my 15 mo. old granddaughter and give her a rattle to shake and I shake the beads in the binding of the book. She has more fun! She wants to read it everyday. It has helped her learn parts of the body and to respond to written words. It is so interactive that it keeps her attention. I would recommend it to parents and teachers alike. Liz

Precious
This was my baby's first favorite book. We read for different things at different times. Sometimes quickly for meter and rhyme, other times not as quickly, with more focus on fun and giggles because there are parts of the text that say "Isn't that funny?" and "Isn't that fun?" Sometimes I giggle and kiss his cheeks and become very interactive with the story. Probably why he loves it so much!

Both my girls' favorite books
As babies both my girls love this book. One is a toddler now and even dances to it and gets more and more from it everyt time we read it. My 11 month old giggles just looking at it. What a fun book! It's also my go-to gift for other babies.
